Inside SA footy legends’ sold homes: Voss, Boak, Phillips

In town for Gather Round and wondering where South Australia’s footy legends live?

Well, we’re not going to tell you that. That’d be irresponsible …

But we can take you inside some of the former homes of SA’s football greats.

And so without further ado, here’s how we covered them when they’ve sold their homes in recent years.

Michael Voss – 72 Clifton St, Malvern. Sold for $2.25m in July 2023

He’s got three AFL premierships under his belt and a Brownlow to his name, and now former Port Adelaide Power assistant coach and current Carlton senior coach Michael Voss is hoping for another win when he sells his Malvern home.

The former Brisbane Lions star bought the 72 Clifton St home in 2016, attracted by its location and character offerings.

“Our kids were going to school at Walford and St Peters so we started to look around in the area and have always been a fan of heritage homes and the villas were a personal favourite and we took on the task of a renovation challenge, and it became our family home for the next seven years,” Voss said.

“I’ve got an older twin boy and girl and another girl and they were mid-teens while growing up there and we wanted to create a home where they each got their own personal space.”

While some in the football world like to live near the club, Voss said being some distance from Alberton had its advantages.

“We were lucky to be surrounded by a good school community, and it’s important to have that separation from work and your lifestyle,” Voss said.

Now living interstate and with just his son – Sturt defender and two-time club best and fairest Casey – living there, the time has come to sell the home.

“We’ve finished the home and whether it was now or the end of the year it was going to happen so we felt the time is right,” he said.

The home has three large bedrooms, a formal lounge and a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area opening to a decked outdoor entertainment area overlooking a low-maintenance rear yard with a studio/rumpus room.

Jeremy Finlayson – 5 Vickers Ave, Hendon. Sold for $915,000 in November, 2024

It was meant to be their forever home, but now Port Adelaide star forward and ruck Jeremy Finlayson and his podcaster wife Kellie are selling their Hendon property as they prepare to bravely fight her next health battle together.

The couple, both 28, bought their Hendon home in May, 2022, attracted by the property’s character charm and proximity to the Port Adelaide Football Club.

“I really wanted a heritage home, like a villa with hardwood floors, and this one was in really good condition,” Kellie says.

“It’s got the world’s biggest backyard, and we wanted to extend but with my health that didn’t happen.”

Sadly, the progression of her cancer means the family now need a place with more space for Kellie’s in-home care, and, now renting a property that will allow them to do that, the time has come to say goodbye to their dream home.

“This was to be our forever home, but I guess life had other plans,” Kellie says.

Their home, at 5 Vickers Ave, has three bedrooms, one bathroom and sits on a 671sq m block.

Travis Boak – 1 Fairfield Ave, Somerton Park. Sold in March 2026

He holds the record for the most AFL games ever played for the Port Adelaide Football Club, and last year Travis Boak hoped for another win after listing his Somerton Park home for sale.

The former captain listed the 1 Fairfield Ave home he bought in 2013 as he leaves SA after a successful 19-season career with the Power and heads back to his home state of Victoria, where the star midfielder will work with Carlton Football Club’s leadership and culture teams, and also with another business in the leadership space.

“Somerton Park felt very much like Torquay and I remember the first time I went down there on my first trip to SA thinking to myself: ‘I’m going to live here one day’,” he said. “It’s close to the water and it just felt like a really nice area.

“My mum loves numbers and it’s number 1 and at the time I was captain and she was like: ‘It kind of makes sense’.

“I knocked down and rebuilt and the build was something I had a lot to do with in terms of creating a tranquil space that I can come home to after a game, whether it was a good or a bad result, and I always felt like I was in my own little world.

Fancy a dip in the pool?

“It’s double glazed and double brick and super quiet and I felt like I was away from everything, and it gave me time to reset and collect my thoughts away from footy.”

The home sits on a 950sqm block and has up to five bedrooms – or four and a home theatre – several living areas, a covered alfresco retreat with outdoor kitchen and a pool with a water feature.

Now renting in Melbourne, Boak says it’ll be sad to say goodbye to his Somerton Park home, but it was time for a family to love it.

Brad Crouch – 4 Sydney Ave, Kidman Park. Sold for $647,500 in January 2021

He left to play for St Kilda in a highly publicised AFL trade deal and in 2021 former Adelaide best and fairest Brad Crouch looked to make another off-field play.

The talented midfielder listed his first home at Kidman Park, where he had lived since 2015. He was attracted to the property at 4 Sydney Ave because of its size, location and potential.

Crouch’s sleek kitchen.

“It’s 730sqm and I’ve loved how big it is,” said Crouch, who made his Adelaide debut in 2013.

“Its location between the city and the sea is great. I was about a five-minute drive to the footy club, so it was the perfect location for me.”

He and partner Brittany Kennedy renovated the kitchen, bathrooms and two rear rooms to transform it into a fantastic entertainer his teammates have enjoyed.

“We’ve had heaps of different parties over the years and had a heap of the players around,” he said.

“It really is an entertainer’s house.

“It’ll be hard to say goodbye, and if we don’t get the price we want, we’ll probably rent it out because we plan to come back to South Australia in the future.

“I’m from Ballarat originally but Brittany is from here and we love it here.”

Rory Laird – 49 Murray St, Lower Mitcham. Sold for $1.9m in June, 2023

He has helped steer the Crows to glory many times throughout his career in 2021 Rory Laird played his part in helping his parents win big when they sold his Lower Mitcham childhood family home.

Laird’s father, Dean, and stepmother, Sarah, listed their 49 Murray St, Lower Mitcham, home with Orlanda Paglia and Ben Clarke of Williams Real Estate, and the gun midfielder and three-time club best-and-fairest winner said he had loved his time at the home.

“Growing up, I spent my time 50/50 here at Lower Mitcham with Dad and my stepmum Sarah, and up at Blackwood with my mum,” he said.

“I lived there from about year 8 to 2014 – a couple of years into the AFL system – and grew up kicking footies in the backyard and playing with mates in the pool.

“I had my 21st birthday out the back and watched myself get drafted out in that entertaining area with my family in 2011.

“After a lot of the games we’ll sit around and have some takeaway and the old man and I will reminisce on what happened that night, it’s just a really comfortable home for me.”

The 1920-built triple-fronted gentleman’s bungalow sits on a 1073sq m corner allotment and has four bedrooms, formal and informal living areas and a pool and spa.

“It’s fantastic they’re selling – the house looks great – but it’s bittersweet because it’s been a big part of my life,” Laird says.

Laird’s father, Dean, an audiometrist, said it had been a wonderful family home but the time has come to embrace the next stage of their lives.

Erin Phillips – 14a Driver Court, West Lakes. Sold for $1,300,750 in February, 2024

In 2023 she called time on her AFLW career and, shortly after outgoing Power captain and former Crows premiership player Erin Phillips announced she was selling her West Lakes home.

Phillips built the 14a Driver Court, West Lakes home in 2019, with her, her wife Tracy Gahan and their three children Blake, Brooklyn and Drew moving in that December.

They’ve since brought another into the fold – five-month-old daughter London – making it a much-loved family home.

“It’s been a very special place and we have a lot of fun memories here,” Phillips said.

“We spent a lot of time here through lockdown, played a lot of games and kept each other company.”

The home overlooks the third green of the West Lakes Golf Club and, while Phillips doesn’t get much time to play a full round, she sneaks in a swing when she can.

The two-storey four-bedroom, three-bathroom home offers 276.74 sqm of indoor and outdoor living space and has a spacious open-plan kitchen, family and dining room that flows out to an alfresco entertainment area.

As much as it has been a wonderful home for her family, it’s also been a great place to share with others.

“Our house has always had an open-door policy with teammates, so we’ve had so many of them come through and have dinner here and Tracy and I have always welcomed teammates,” Phillips said.

The couple have since found another home in the area, where they are looking forward to making new memories with their children.

Gavin Wanganeen – 27 Dashwood Rd, Beaumont. Sold for $2m in May, 2022

It’s the place former Port Adelaide captain Gavin Wanganeen began his artistic journey and, in 2022, it was time for his family to say goodbye to their stunning Beaumont home.

Wanganeen and wife Pippa bought the property nine years ago, attracted by its eastern suburbs location and the space it offered their large family – Gavin and Pippa have four young girls and Gavin has two older children.

“It was a beautiful home with really good bones and a great backyard and it had nice bedrooms upstairs for the little girls,” Wanganeen said.

“We’ve got a nice lawn area here and a big deck by the pool, and the kids are always ripping around that on their scooters and bikes, so they’ve spent many years there getting some great exercise, which is important.”

The home, at 27 Dashwood Rd, features five bedrooms, a kids’ retreat, a home office, a rumpus room and a swimming pool.

“My art career grew here,” Wanganeen said.

“Pippa encouraged me to get into my art and I found my confidence as an artist here on the kitchen table. That’s where I’ve done all art over the years.

“The area puts me in a really good mood and that’s conducive to creating.” The family is moving to another eastern suburbs home but not all of the art will be leaving.

“We feel a painting needs to stay in this house, so whoever buys this house will get a lovely piece of Gavin Wanganeen art so the home can continue its art journey,” Wanganeen said.

“Plus, on the wall behind the bedhead in our bedroom is Gavin Wanganeen wallpaper – this is the very first prototype piece we ever designed.:

Max Basheer – 16 Simpson Rd, Wattle Park. Currently under contract

Legendary football administrator and top lawyer the late Max Basheer AM bought their Wattle Park home with his late wife Elaine in 1967 – on the day Harold Holt mysteriously disappeared – attracted by its location and the sense of tranquillity it offered. It’s those same features they enjoyed that daughters Jayne and Ann, who are selling the property, have also loved.

“Right up to the end Dad loved it here,” Jayne says.

“He was still practising law at 92 and was the oldest solicitor in Australia with an active client base. He lived here right up to his last days, supported by his family, just because he didn’t want to leave. It’s an interesting home and a very elegant, relaxed house.

“It’s elevated on the property so when you sit on the veranda, it feels like a Queenslander except it’s made of stone. And you get these wonderful gully winds, so you have this sublime feeling in that you wake up to kookaburras and magpies and bird life, and it all changes with the seasons.”
