An Unley townhouse was the creation of a much-loved member of parliament and offers a fantastic entertainer’s lifestyle just moments from some of the state’s most popular shops, cafes and restaurants.

Graham and Lee O’Connor bought the 27a Miller St home from new in 2002, attracted by its size, position, layout and proximity to quality amenities.

“The block was owned by Jeannie Ferris who used to be in federal parliament – she developed the block and she lived on one side and sold the other side to us,” Mr O’Connor said.

Ms Ferris was a South Australian Liberal Party senator from 1996 to 2007, serving as the Government Deputy Whip in the Senate from November, 2001 to August, 2002, and then the Government Whip in the Senate from then until her death in April, 2007.

She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October, 2005.

Getting back to the property, Mr O’Connor said its location was second to none.

“It’s a wonderful location so close to the restaurants and cafes on King William and Unley Rds, and it offers really access to the city either by foot or the tram.

“The house itself was perfect for our needs, being so nicely designed and well built, and we really loved the French provincial look about it. We had two of our kids here with us for the first part of our time there but they’ve since moved out and there’s just the two of us here now so it’s time for us to start the next chapter of our lives.

“The kids loved it here because it was close to uni and everything they wanted to do after hours, and it became a real focal point for footy clubs and baseball clubs in the community as the kids lived there.”

The home offers 261sqm of living space over its two levels and has three bedrooms.

The master suite sits on the upper level and has a retreat, a walk-in robe, an ensuite and two bedrooms.

Downstairs you’ll find the two minor bedrooms – one of which can be used as an office – a grand foyer, a covered patio, a family bathroom, a laundry and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living room with a bay window. This space opens to an alfresco dining area complete with an outdoor kitchen.

“It was particularly well specced when built and we’ve since placed our own touch on it, completely remodelling the kitchen to create a lot more options for us,” Mr O’Connor says.

“It’s great for entertaining because it can be quite an intimate house when you want it, but then can really accommodate a lot of people as there are so many entertaining areas both inside and outside. It has hosted many parties over the years – Christmases, birthdays, pre-wedding celebrations, 60th birthdays and football grand final parties – so it has been a very popular place.”

Mr O’Connor says the home would appeal to young families, downsizers, individuals or those looking to travel.

“I hope its next owners enjoy it as much as we have,” he said. “We’ve really loved it.”

The home is on the market through Cynthia Sajkunovic of Ouwens Casserly, with expressions of interest closing Thursday, February 27.
