An iconic bubblegum pink 'Barbie House' - painted in bright pink and purple - is now available for rent at $55,000 a month.

Built in 1998, the narrow four-level house is an unmissable pop of color for drivers exiting down the freeway ramp from Los Angeles onto Highway 1 en route to Malibu.

On the main level, you can see right through to the back of the home, where the living room meets the large expanse of public beach. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead to a glass-enclosed patio and unobstructed views.

“As soon as you come to the top of the stairs you are face to face with that gorgeous view of sand and ocean,” said Kevin Mitchell of Sotheby’s International Realty

On the next level up is the primary suite that faces the same view with a seating area and patio overlooking the sand.

“Even the primary bath has a window in it so if you are standing and brushing your teeth in the morning, you turn to the right and the view is right there,” he said.

There is also a lower level with another primary suite that’s screened from the back by a row of hedges and a large roof deck with views of the Santa Monica pier. “That’s the party palace,” Mr Mitchell said.

The owners are Howie Nuchow, co-head of sports giant CAA Sports, and his wife, Gina Nuchow, who purchased the home in 2015 for $7.7 million (US$5.4 million), according to public records.

It’s been on the rental market on and off for several years, beginning at $69,000 (US$49,000) a month in 2020 and most recently for $56,000 (US$39,500) until it was removed in December.

The Barbie House is hard to miss, but it’s even more noticeable because the home next door is monochrome black. It’s been called the Batman, Voldemort and Marilyn Manson house by various social media memes, and streams of Instagrammers have come to take photos of the two opposites.

They even got an extra boost due to the “Barbie”-“Oppenheimer”—otherwise known as “Barbenheimer”—mania several years ago.

“The real claim to fame is when the neighbouring house got new ownership, and they changed the whole front and painted it matte black,” Mitchell said.

In fact, both houses were part of a colorful trio built by the same developer in the 1990s called the “Sherbert Houses,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The first house, painted baby blue, traded in 2007, the second—painted foam green—sold in 2012 to the “Batman” owners so the pink one is the last one remaining—and the current owners have kept it up.

“They’re not painting it, that’s for sure,” Mr Mitchell said. “They’ve definitely embraced it.”
