President Donald Trump on Monday sent to the Senate the nomination of Matt Jones for the dual role of assistant secretary for the Department Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Federal Housing Administration (FHA) commissioner, filling the vacancy left by Frank Cassidy in June. Jones currently serves as HUD’s deputy assistant secretary for single-family housing. If confirmed, he would oversee the FHA’s single-family, multifamily and healthcare mortgage insurance programs, inheriting an agency that manages about $2 trillion in insured mortgages and has undergone policy changes under HUD Secretary Scott Turner. The job was open to Jones because Cassidy stepped down in June to return to the private sector after a brief temporary leave. During his tenure, Cassidy focused on streamlining FHA operations, modernizing loss mitigation and expanding access to alternative credit reporting, he said in an interview with HousingWire.
