Andrew Winter and Dennis Scott have launched a new budget renovation series.
Real estate guru Andrew Winter and landscaper Dennis Scott have bought a fixer-upper on the outskirts of Brisbane in a bid to prove renovating on a budget is possible.
The property called ‘Betty’s Place’ is in Bellbird Park, about 30km from Brisbane’s CBD, and is the star of the pair’s new YouTube series, documenting their journey to discover the real cost of renovating a home in 2026.
“I’ve seen some enormous budgets thrown at houses — sometimes wisely, sometimes not,” Mr Winter said.

“I want to found out what is genuinely possible if you plan to renovate in the mid-2020s. A normal budget —not a limitless credit card or TV freebies — just careful decisions, honest work, sweat equity, patience, and compromise.

“That’s why I bought ‘Betty’s Place’ — a small, fairly ordinary, three-bedroom house. Nothing glamorous, just solid and in need of some serious attention.
“I want to see whether a smart, well-planned renovation is still achievable for everyday Australians.”

They plan to turn the three-bedroom, one-bathroom house into a four-bedroom, two-bathroom masterpiece — without spending a fortune.
Mr Winter, who is also Compare the Market’s property expert and a host of Selling Houses Australia, admits the house has a “horrid floor” and “horrid curtains”, plus a fairly cramped, old-school kitchen, but with “good bones”.
“It’s definitely worth saving, but how will we save it?”

Episode One has just been released and the pair have already revealed some handy tips and tricks.
Mr Winter said he sent the floorplan to an architect to simply rejig, which wasn’t as expensive as adding on an extension or completely remodelling a house.
“I said I need four bedrooms, two bathrooms that is the cheapest, most viable way of doing it, and she came up with a plan,” he said. “So, don’t dismiss architects.”

When it comes to opening up the enclosed kitchen, Mr Scott recommended keeping the plumbing and electrics in same spot.
“Then, straight away you’re saving money,” Mr Scott said. “To get rid of the walls, I’ll have to see which way the trusses are going, but that all should be an easy get out.”
Also, choosing a flatpack kitchen over a custom-designed one will save lots of dollars.

To save costs on adding a second bathroom, they are going to sacrifice the separate laundry, so that they can keep the plumbing.
Neither bathroom will be an en suite, but they believe having two bathrooms is better than one in any case.
