Pub baron lists Spanish Mission mansion ahead of expansion

Norman Hotel owner James Power is selling his Spanish Mission estate on Hamilton Hill.

Third-generation publican James Power — the man behind Brisbane’s iconic Norman Hotel — is selling his sprawling Spanish Mission estate amid plans to expand the brand.

Mr Power and his wife, Jennifer, are downsizing from the trophy home at 33 Markwell Street, Hamilton, after nearly 13 years now their three children have grown up.

It comes as Mr Power, whose family has been synonymous with Brisbane hospitality for generations, prepares to open a second iteration of ‘Brisbane’s worst vegetarian restaurant’ — The Norman Northside — in Enoggera.

This property at 33 Markwell St, Hamilton, is on the market via expressions of interest.

The Powers paid $5.05m for the property in 2013 — two years before they purchased the Norman Hotel for about $7m.

The circa 1930s mansion sits on a 1376 sqm parcel on Hamilton Hill, commanding sweeping views to the Brisbane River, the Gateway Bridge, Port of Brisbane, and Moreton Bay.

Facing due east, the home catches every sunrise while escaping the afternoon western sun — a detail Mr Power knows only too well after more than a decade of entertaining there.

“We did a lot of entertaining at Markwell Street,” he said. “The guest wing means it’s really set up for it, but we are basically empty nesters now and it’s time for another family to enjoy it.”

The home offers six bedrooms, four bathrooms, three powder rooms, a study, and six-car garaging.

There’s also a wine cellar, steam room, a gym, a resort-style pool, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and even a dumbwaiter.

The Mediterranean-style gardens are stocked with citrus, herbs, chillies and limes, reflecting the family’s love of good food and good company.

“Perfect for a G&T or a mojito,” Mr Power said.

A significant renovation was carried out by the property’s previous owner, Dave Allen, between 1999 and 2000, which added a top-level entertaining area and gym.

The Powers have since added their own touches, including retiling the pool surrounds in travertine.

While the property has been listed without a price guide, comparable sales in the vicinity show it should sell for north of $10m.

The property is being marketed via an expressions of interest campaign through Ray White Collective Luxury principal Matt Lancashire, who described Hamilton as one of the most coveted addresses in the country.

“Known for its elevated position, river views, and luxury homes, Hamilton is a top choice for affluent buyers,” he said.

Mr Lancashire recently launched Ray White Collective Luxury as Brisbane’s first agency dedicated exclusively to homes valued at $4 million and above in response to increasing demand for prestige property in that price range.
