The Valuer General in Australia might cost you more in tax and council rates if they raise the value of your land but at least they aren’t forcing their way into your home to do so. The same can’t be said for homes in England after a strict new house tax was rammed through political channels to take effect from April 2028. The new ‘mansion’ tax will target homes across the country worth more than £2 million (AUD $3.81 million), requiring owners to pay an annual surcharge. The amount payable per year will range from £2,500 to £7,500 (AUD $4700 to $14,300), depending on the value of the home. Chancellor Rachel Reeves introduced the High Value Council Tax Surcharge to tackle longstanding wealth gaps across England that sometimes so less expensive homes coughing up for tax than multimillion-dollar properties. While no one is ever happy to be slugged with a new tax, it will be the method of determining how much tax should be paid that is making English homeowners a tad nervous.
