Mount Macedon’s masterpiece The Cruciform House hits market

1 day ago 5

The Cruciform House, a modernist Mount Macedon home, was designed by architect Peter Woolard at Studio 101.

The property, 2 Tucketts Rd, Mount Macedon, has been showcased in a variety of magazines and publications and is recognised as one of Australia’s most notable residential designs, combining architectural excellence with a connection to the landscape.

Built over two years and completed in 2009, the residence occupies the site of the original Macedon Lodge homestead and was designed to complement the natural environment.

The home features a northern orientation that maximises natural light and frames the views across the valley, as well as locally sourced materials, including Castlemaine stone and ironbark timber. The vendors, Peter and Aaron, say these are some of the features they (and their cat, Cherry) will miss most about the home.

The home is recognised as one of Australia’s most notable residential designs.

“Nearly every room looks out over the surrounding countryside, so you’re always connected to the landscape, whether you’re having a quiet morning coffee or entertaining friends and family,” Peter says.

“Cherry has certainly made the most of it too – she spends her days chasing patches of sunlight from room to room and curling up for another nap wherever the sun happens to be.”

But the scale of the home was one of the first features to stand out to him and to others who visit.

“The soaring ceilings and central stone walls are the first things visitors seem to notice. There’s almost always a ‘wow’ as they step through the front door,” Peter says.

Despite its generous proportions, Peter says it never feels imposing.

“It somehow manages to feel grand enough for entertaining while still being wonderfully comfortable to live in every day.”

The residence sits on two 4ha titles and features a range of outdoor amenities.

The home is listed for sale with a $5.5m-$5.75m asking price

The home sits on two 4ha titles and features a range of outdoor amenities, including a separate detached cottage currently used as a games retreat, a solar-heated pool, an ornamental lake, a four-car garage, and an in-ground trampoline.

The gardens are also a much-loved feature of the property and have been a labour of love for the vendors.

“The house was already beautifully designed, but the gardens had become a little tired over the years, which gave me the perfect opportunity to start creating the edible landscape I’d always dreamed of,” Peter says.

“The gardens have been developed using permaculture zoning principles, making them productive and easy to maintain, and drip irrigation services the major plantings. There’s also a small vineyard planted with cool-climate varieties, including chardonnay and pinot noir.”

Mount Macedon Realty’s Lisa Fowler has the home listed for sale with a $5.5m-$5.75m asking price via private treaty.
