Residents forced to leave new-build estate weeks after moving in

Residents from the UK have been told to leave their “forever homes” just weeks after moving in – because a mineshaft has been discovered underneath. Families on Gilbert View in Gilmerton only signed leases on the new-build houses and flats earlier this year – and have barely unpacked, The Sun reports. But some have been ordered out for up to two months after further construction revealed a mine beneath their estate. Gilmerton is former coalmining village and residential suburb about four miles southeast of Edinburgh. Most of the residents moved in February after they were built by Miller Homes and allocated through housing association Places For People. The residents, many of whom had been searching for a permanent home for years, have been told they will be placed in temporary unfurnished accommodation. They will have to take their furniture and white goods with them – and some fear their garden will be dug up. Residents have been told their moving costs will be covered, as well as their rent at the new property and bills at Gilbert View.
