It’s no secret that the U.S. population is aging rapidly. An Urban Institute analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data found that the nation will have a 65-and-older population of 80 million in 2040, twice as large as it was in 2000, meaning that about 20% of the population will fall into this senior cohort in the coming years. The “silver tsunami” is a phrase that has gained momentum over the years to describe this population trend. And its effects are being felt all over the country, from traditionally popular retirement destinations like Florida and Arizona to out-of-the-way locales like Flathead County, Montana. A Bloomberg report published Wednesday delved into a similar story that’s developing in Delaware — specifically in Sussex County, the southernmost of the state’s three counties. A number of desirable beach towns in Sussex County have driven an influx of new baby boomer residents.
