Within a fortnight of the May federal budget, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was citing weekend auction reports as a sign that his property taxation policies were already working. He told the parliament of an Alexandria auction that had been featured on the ABC’s 7.30 program. “A young couple were there,” the PM noted. “They had bought their first home in an auction in Sydney on Saturday for even less than they had budgeted.
