Adelaideans have defended their city after it copped a satirical roasting from the Sht Towns of Australia Facebook page – but they’ve also kinda agreed with the description. The Facebook site ‘Sht Towns of Australia’, which has 636,000 followers, playfully sends up both well-loved and lesser-known locations across the nation its anonymous author decides are … well … sht. An equal opportunity offender, all states are fair game, and while the site usually singles out towns, South Australia’s capital – Adelaide – was this week the subject of some tongue-in-cheek ridicule via an excerpt from pseudonymic authors Rick Furphy and Geoff Rissole’s 2019 book Sh*t Towns of Australia. “Adelaide is known as the ‘City of Churches, Pubs and Serial Killers’,” the post reads. “The city’s roll of gory crimes includes a series of gruesome murders committed by a shadowy cabal of pedophiles, a series of gruesome murders committed by a bunch of drongos on the dole, and Jimmy Barnes’s musical career.
