DOJ, FBI say China-backed hackers breached Fed, other US agencies

Two hacking platforms allegedly run by a Chinese state-sponsored group were used to access government networks, including the Federal Reserve, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Senate. The DOJ and FBI said they have seized the hackers’ domains. The tools, known as QScan and QTRouter, targeted U.S. critical infrastructure and sensitive government networks, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday in the Southern District of California. Targets also included NASA, the Department of Energy, the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health. The DOJ and the FBI believe they are operated by a group called “QTFY,” employed by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company in China. The Chinese ​embassy did not immediately respond to HousingWire‘s request for comment. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the action is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle foreign-sponsored hacking campaigns that threaten U.S. infrastructure. “State-sponsored malicious hackers preying on America’s critical infrastructure will be stopped and prosecuted.
