On Aug. 26, Alejandro Diaz Torriente, 67, was found guilty of the financial exploitation of a 94-year-old woman and sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation, according to the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office. The victim was living on her own in her El Portal, FL, home, which she purchased in 1980 for $US74,400 ($1.04m), property records show. The three-bedroom home is currently valued at more than $US888,000 ($1.24m), according to automated valuation models. In 2021, the victim was declared legally incompetent, according to WTVJ, and prosecutors say Diaz Torriente took advantage of her diminished capacity to financially exploit her. Diaz Torriente, who was a local handyman and acquaintance of the victim, become increasingly involved in the elderly woman’s life.
