Sydney renter Jessica Amir has spoken out after her mould-riddled Manly apartment left her sick and facing a $100-a-week rent increase. Ms Amir’s apartment rent rose from $700 to $800, in July following landmark property tax reforms announced with the May federal budget. “There was no explanation, no reason,” she said. “I guess it was just disappointing.” Ms Amir said the property had a mould problem that made her sick, but when she brought this up with the rental agent she was advised to simply manage the issue with cleaning, ventilation and a dehumidifier. “The real estate agent when I notified them about it, they said it was kind of endemic with the northern beaches, and these older style properties,” she said. “(The agent) just told me just to wash everything, keep the walls clean – take my clothes out of the wardrobe, wash the back of the wardrobe, get a dehumidifier and just regularly keep the windows open.
