Jockey and horse trainer Pat Hyland and his wife Maree’s Nar Nar Goon North property has changed hands.

A Gippsland farm owned by the late Melbourne Cup-winning jockey turned trainer Pat Hyland and his wife Maree has sold after being listed with an $11m-$12m range.

Hyland, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 84, and Maree first put their 42.61ha Nar Nar Goon North property on the market in 2024 before relisting last year.

An Australian Racing Hall of Famer, Hyland placed first on thoroughbred What A Nuisance in the 1985 race that stops a nation.

According to Racing Victoria, Hyland was one of just eight Australian jockeys to complete the sport’s “grand slam” of winning the Golden Slipper, Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, between 1965 and 1989.

A year later, he retired to focus on training and ended up with more than 500 winning horses to his name.

Hyland and Maree’s son Chris also became a racehorse trainer, while their other sons Matthew and Sam pursued careers as jockeys.

Matthew is now the Victorian Jockeys Association’s chief executive, while his dad formerly served as the association’s president.

Hyland and Maree’s four-bedroom farmhouse at 365 Seymour Rd features a pool, two-to-three car garage and paddocks home to 80 head of cattle and four ponies.

Matthew said his family would treasure the many memories they shared of the house that their parents had built.

“We wish the new owners all the best and expect they will create their own memories in a beautiful family home and property,” he added.

Raine and Horne Land Victoria’s Atul Sama said the residence, which changed hands for an undisclosed figure, was constructed by one of the Mornington Peninsula’s top builders, Icon Synergy.

“The property is beautiful, they (the Hylands) put their heart and soul into it when they built it,” Mr Sama said.

“The views are immaculate and they probably spent about $3.5m on building the house.”

Its new owner is a local who plans to live there with his family, Mr Sama added.

In March, the Victorian Jockeys Association’s operations officer Matt Pumpa said Hyland would be remembered for his achievements in the saddle, plus his legacy in advocating on behalf of improved safety and working conditions for jockeys.

Racing Victoria chief executive Aaron Morrison said Hyland’s contribution to the sport across six decades had been incredible.

”He sits comfortably among the greats of thoroughbred racing in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame,” Morrison said.

“He is one of only a handful of jockeys to secure Australian racing’s grand slam who went on to forge a career as a highly successful Group 1 winning trainer.”
