A timber church tucked away in a storied bohemian village in the Byron hinterland has been listed for sale after a vivid makeover.

Originally built as a Methodist church a century ago before becoming a Uniting church, the unique property at 90 Cullen Street, Nimbin has had a radical personality change in recent years.

Now known as the Church of Aquarius, the building has served as a community space for workshops, talks and gatherings since 2023.

Events held at the church include music performances, poetry competitions, yoga and meditation sessions, drumming classes and winter solstice celebrations.

Its name harks back to the Aquarius Festival, a 1973 counterculture arts and music event that has been described as Australia’s answer to Woodstock.

The event drew thousands of festival-goers to the small town in northern NSW, spurring on Australia’s hippie movement and putting Nimbin on the map as a hub for practitioners of alternative lifestyles.

The timber church, which now sports a vibrant lemon-yellow colour scheme, is on the market for $580,000, making it cheaper than a small apartment in a capital city.

It’s also lower than Nimbin’s median house price of $715,000, which has climbed 4.4% higher in the past year, according to PropTrack data.

Despite its modest 87sqm footprint, the interior feels spacious thanks to its high vaulted ceilings and open layout.

The pews have been reorganised from the traditional row configuration to create a gathering space in the centre of the hall.

Polished timber floorboards run throughout, while arched windows line the walls and give the space a calm, airy vibe.

It also includes a kitchenette, while a separate outbuilding includes two toilets, making the site functional for gatherings.

The 1055sqm block is fully fenced and includes established gardens and lawns, providing a tranquil green space around the building.

Its flexible RU5 Village zoning allows for residential, community or small‑scale creative uses, subject to council approval.

Selling agent Uri Ross said the property had already attracted plenty of interest, including from both locals and buyers based in southeast Queensland.

"They're coming from over the border to where life is a bit slower paced," he said.

Mr Ross said Nimbin's property market had heated up in recent years.

“Houses in town or small acreages out of town have been flying off the shelf.”
