As Hollywood reels from a bizarre “clone” conspiracy involving Jim Carrey, the star himself is hidden away in his private residence in Hawaii.
Carey emerged from years of seclusion with a new look this week that has left fans convinced the star has been replaced.
The frenzy comes as the 63-year-old suffered a staggering $US12 million ($A17 million) hit on his Los Angeles estate, further fuelling reports he is permanently fleeing the spotlight for a reclusive life in Hawaii.
The Mask actor recently offloaded his Brentwood mansion for $US17 million ($A26 million), a massive $US12 million ($A17 million) drop from his original $28.9 million ($A44.2 million) asking price in 2023.

These days, Carrey leads a simpler life than his reported $US180 million ($A255 million) wealth would suggest.
Insiders told The Sun the Golden Globe winner is now a “hideaway” in Maui who uses a fake name to stay “incognito”.
“He sometimes tells people his name is Josh or John,” a source told the outlet.
“He doesn’t spend much money, he lives simply – walks, has coffee while staring at the ocean for hours, reads, writes.
“He wakes up when he wants, sometimes has breakfast for dinner, and often forgets what day it is.
“He simply doesn’t want to be part of that world anymore. He’s on a spiritual journey of self-discovery, thinking about life and his legacy.”
The world “lost its mind” this week after the comedy legend made a rare appearance at the César Awards.
Social media erupted this week with claims the man on stage was a body double or a clone, citing smoother skin and altered posture.
Viral TikTok clips have even pointed to the star signing autographs with his right hand, despite the comedian being famously left-handed.
While awards organisers insist it was the real Carrey, fans are “scrutinising every pixel” of the footage.

The “unrecognisable” appearance follows Carrey’s move to sever ties with his old life.
The Batman Forever star’s retreat from the limelight follows a dark period in his personal life, including the 2015 death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White.
A 2013 letter alleged Carrey had introduced her to “cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse and disease”.
While the actor denied the claims and wrongful death lawsuits were dismissed, the scandal and a string of box office flops saw him vanish from the A-list.
Apart from playing the villain in three Sonic the Hedgehog films, a move he admitted was for the money, Carrey hasn’t appeared in a movie for years.
The star’s two-year stint on the US comedy Kidding ended in 2020 and he is said to be “drained” by the industry.
“Jim still gets offers,” said the insider.
“Three or four movies a year, sometimes for $5 or $6 million, but he turns them all down.
“The industry drained him, he lost his love for it. He feels creativity and freedom of expression in movies are very limited now, and because of that, he doesn’t see himself doing any more films.”

The insider said the actor is even considering moving to Greece or the Mediterranean to be more “isolated and anonymous”.
“I don’t think he’ll ever make another movie, unless he absolutely needs money – that’s why he accepted the Sonic the Hedgehog role – or unless something truly magical comes along, which seems unlikely now,” the insider said.
“He’s comfortable where he is now, having finally found balance after years of struggle. He says he’s happy – and I believe him.”
