A rear extension has transformed this four-bedroom house at 220 Kilgour St, Geelong.
Two wildly different architectural eras come together to form one elegant package at this masterfully renovated period home on Geelong’s fringe.
Vendors Tori and Matt fell in love with their original 1938 home’s Art Deco character when they bought 220 Kilgour St, Geelong, back in 2021.
Not wanting to compromise the integrity of the heritage-listed weatherboard and brick residence, they decided to add a sleek new wing when it came time to extend and link the two sections via a discrete walkway.

The key hurdle to unlock Geelongs’ apartment boom
The vendors didn’t want to mess with the Art Deco home’s heritage facade.
The extension makes a bold, modern statement with its black charred timber cladding and open-plan living zone featuring white polished concrete floors and 6m-high cathedral ceilings.
“We always just wanted that high cathedral look which is quite deceiving because anyone that comes through the front of the house doesn’t know what’s out the back and how high the ceilings area so we just wanted that wow factor,” Tori says.
Incorporating a sunken lounge around a gas fireplace created another talking point.
“We just really wanted something different and it is quite cosy when you’re sitting down there with the fireplace,” she says.
Renovating the house was a four-year process, with the couple living in the front section during the extension before turning their attention to sprucing up the original rooms.
The open-plan living wing overlooks the garden, where there is space to install a pool.
The built-in coffee station or bar at one end of the kitchen can be concealed as desired.
The front lounge retains original features such as an Art Deco ceiling rose.
Tori says the only major structural change was turning the former dining room into their main bedroom and converting the old kitchen in large walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.
Each of the four bedrooms and the formal front lounge retain original double doors and individual Art Deco ceiling roses, now complemented by sympathetic light fittings.
Interior design studio Resident Avenue helped the couple refine their choices.
Custom timber joinery in the wardrobe reflects the quality fittings throughout, with CDK Stone limestone benchtops featuring in both bathrooms and the kitchen, alongside premium Siemens studio line appliances and a Bora ‘Pure’ induction cooktop with integrated extraction fan.
With its garden views, Tori loves hanging out in the kitchen.
The main bedroom is a suite with a corner fireplace and feature lighting.
Custom timber cabinetry makes an appearance in the ensuite.
Skylights draw extra light into the flexible loft garage above the double garage.
“We have some big bi-fold doors that open all the way up and it’s really nice on a summer’s day, having all those doors open to get a fresh breeze coming through,” she says. “That would be my favourite part of the house.”
The extension also includes a double garage with rear access topped by a habitable loft featuring skylights, timber floors and reverse cycle airconditioning.
Tori says the flexible space could serve an extra living room, studio, home office or guest accommodation.
