Inside China’s abandoned ‘Ghost City’

The ‘Ghost City’ of China. By Jamie Kiraz A gigantic abandoned estate, 15 footy fields in size, is causing a stir after footage of the dystopian ‘Ghost City’ re-emerged online. Chinese developer Century Jin Yuan Group envisaged its Gu’an Xintiandi villa community, in Lianjiany County, outside Fuzhou in the south of the country, would be a ultra-luxury, flagship, residential area for the Chinese elite. Picture: Facebook Each villa brought together modern Chinese design with classical western architecture and featured expansive private gardens and huge indoor spaces on around 500 sqm each. Each villa was priced at around 22 million yuan or $4.3m. A whole community was built around the estate, including schools, a dedicated ‘cultural street’ and a 5-star hotel, in an attempt to make it fully independent. But once the project was completed, Chinese homebuyers rejected the Gui’an Xintiandi villas because they were overpriced and poorly located. And they have stayed that way ever since.
