As the American dream of a leisurely retirement becomes increasingly uncertain, a new report from WalletHub offers a road map for seniors seeking financial security and a high quality of life. With only 21% of workers feeling “very confident” about having enough money for retirement, the financial planning website analyzed more than 180 U.S. cities to identify the best — and worst — places for retirees to settle down. According to WalletHub, the ideal retirement city is a balancing act: It must minimize taxes and expenses while providing opportunities for paid work, along with providing access to high-quality healthcare and enjoyable activities. The report ranks cities across 45 key metrics, categorized into affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare. WalletHub’s 2026 rankings reveal a clear trend as Florida remains the premier state for retirees, securing three of the top five spots. Orlando took the No. 1 position. Its appeal is driven by exceptional tax-friendliness, as Florida has no estate, inheritance or income tax.
