Image: GettyVictorian planning minister Sonya Kilkenny has officially approved the Melton East Precinct Structure Plan, which allows developers to advance with their permit approvals for new housing and other development to the east of the existing suburb of Melton. As the project advances, this will become the new suburb of Melton East, estimated to eventually be home to more than 36,000 residents and support around 1,600 jobs. The precinct will contain nearly 12,000 new homes, seven schools and, according to the government, “more than five MCGs worth of parks and reserves”. Some of that greenspace will be conservation land, as part of the area was found to be home to the endangered Growling Grass Frog. Conservation land will be zoned Rural Conservation Zone 3 (RCZ3), and the Crown will acquire conservation land as development in the precinct occurs.
