Malcolm Freake starts every day with a swim in the surf at Aireys Inlet.

Well in his 70s, the businessman and philanthropist is in training for the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast on March 20.

It’s a routine he’s likely to continue, but not from Jumbunna, the Spanish-inspired home on a 23.6ha Great Ocean Road property that was created by legendary opera singer Dame Joan Hammond.

The property at 1005 Great Ocean Road and 130 Gilbert St, Aireys Inlet, is listed with price expectations between $6.5m and $7.15m.

Patron and a director of Bluearth Foundation, a charity dedicated to addressing health and wellbeing through physical activity at schools, Mr Freake is a dedicated swimmer and still wears the Fairhaven SLSC cap at national competitions.

The draw to the coast and the bushland is perhaps this property’s biggest attraction – the three‑bedroom, two‑bathroom home offers sweeping ocean views, a pool, tennis court and private helipad, and is designed to enjoy the tranquillity of its surrounds, amid a resort‑style atmosphere.

“I start the morning with a swim (out in the surf), so to me it’s a combination of both the sea and the bush,” he said.

The elevated home has views across the water, while kangaroos approach in the morning and evening.

“The kangaroos come up to the house every morning and every evening just eating the grass and looking at what we’re doing.”

Jumbunna has some magnificent walks, he said, including a favourite through neighbouring parkland to Urquhart Bluff and returning via the ocean cliffs.

“I love competing. It’s not necessarily that I’m aiming to get medals, it’s just the enjoyment of competing,” he said.

“It gives me some incentive right throughout the year to go for my swims and my runs, and I work to keep my body in good shape.”

But he’s decided to sell Jumbunna to cut back on work as he approached 80, but they has another home in nearby Fairhaven where they can enjoy family visits with their nine grandchildren.

The property, which has a second three-bedroom dwelling, is listed by Colliers Geelong agents Ben Young and Ned Tansey and Moonah Real Estate’s Darcy Bennett and Simon Bogdanov.

Mr Young said it’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

The bushland property combines the best of coastal and bush living.

The sitting room has glass on three sides in the second dwelling on the property.

“Its scale, seclusion and extraordinary setting make it unique, and the future potential here is enormous,” he said.

“Whether considering a private estate, a luxury retreat, or a blend of residential and low‑impact commercial uses, this site gives purchasers a rare level of freedom to imagine what comes next.”

Mr Bennett said, “Aireys Inlet has a genuine village feel, incredible natural beauty and a sense of exclusivity that people value deeply.”

“You’re moments from beaches, walking trails and the iconic Split Point Lighthouse, yet far from the intensity of the major coastal centres.”

The expressions of interest campaign closes April 15.
