Brisbane 2032: The inner-city suburb rezoned for 27,000 new homes

As the city gears up to host the world’s biggest sporting event, the state is sending building heights soaring in one of its key precincts. The Queensland government has announced plans to fast-track nearly 27,000 new homes as part of amendments to a priority development area (PDA) in Bowen Hills, just 3km from Brisbane’s CBD. Picture: GettyThe Bowen Hills PDA, which is a land area identified by the state for accelerated housing development, aims to fast-track an additional 4000 homes, adding to the 23,000 already planned over the life of the PDA. The 108-hectare PDA sits directly next to the Victoria Park Precinct, which will be a key precinct for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, featuring a new Brisbane Stadium, the National Aquatic Centre and Brisbane Showgrounds. Other proposed amendments include raising height limits from 30 to 50 storeys, removing red tape for development and supporting food and drink uses near the Showgrounds, including boutique breweries and micro-distilleries.
