Aussie renters union warns rental strikes are looming amid cost pain

Victorian renters are considering industrial action against the state’s landlords, including Spanish-style rent strikes, amid growing concerns over rents outpacing wages. The Renters and Housing Union for Australia has revealed they fear it is now inevitable the nation will reach a point of tenants organising for mass protests and even collectively withholding some or all of their rent as they seek to negotiate better conditions or fairer rents. While it is being seen as a “last resort” by the militant rental advocacy union, the idea does have support within parliament, with Victorian Greens MP and the party’s state spokesperson for housing and renters, Gabrielle de Vietri backing it as a final option.
