A profound appreciation for the natural landscape greatly shapes this landmark Brown Hill residence, designed by Eldridge Anderson Architects.
The vendors, Billy and Jennifer Anderson, said that it was the natural environment, the bush setting, that initially attracted them to the block at 5 Palentino Place around six years ago.
“We loved the area and the closeness to Ballarat town centre, as we were already a busy family with young kids,” Billy explained.
“The outlook from the block was also something that really excited us. We were keen to work with an architect who would capture the view and bring that inside, whilst also creating a dwelling that sat well in the already beautiful surroundings.”
Working with the couple and the architects were the teams from Murphy James Builders and Simon Taylor Landscape Design, who helped bring the vision for the four-bedroom residence to life.
“The home itself is intentionally simplistic to enjoy the views of the outside,” said Billy.

A Brown Hill property has hit the market for a six-figure sum.
The vendors said that it was the natural environment, the bush setting, that initially attracted them to the block.
The home features a custom, circular concrete swimming pool.
This is further complemented by the established landscaped garden.
“Simon Taylor Landscaping worked alongside the architects to pair a beautiful native garden with the home,” Billy explained.
“We’ve been so happy with the results.”
Utilising the robust materials of brick, timber and concrete, and a neutral colour palette, the home’s design is modern, simple, and functional and responds to its setting.
Following the natural slope of the land, the home falls in two directions- showcasing the responsive design – creating a series of levels with the arched roofline connecting the two spaces and becoming a feature in its own right.
Wrapping around a central courtyard that embraces natural light through double-glazed Blackbutt windows, this sheltered centre serves as the home’s core.
“The outlook to the curved facade that captures the bush view is something very special,” Billy said.

The house is listed for $2 million – $2.1 million.
Outdoors, the home features a custom, circular concrete swimming pool, which the Andersons say has been a favourite feature for them and their three children.
“The pool area has the house wrapping around it. It’s a beautiful focal point,” Billy said.
“It has kept our family entertained for hours. We love looking out and seeing family and friends enjoying it over the summer months.
A detached brick-veneer studio, complete with a mezzanine, heating, kitchenette, and toilet, offers further flexibility.
“We added an amazing studio where we’ve been finding the kids love hanging out in and working on their bikes or hanging with friends,” Billy said.
“It’s been another great entertaining area when friends come over.”
5 Palentino Place, Brown Hill, is listed through Tim Valpied at Jellis Craig Ballarat for $2 million – $2.1 million.
