Today’s MLS leaders are wedged between realities. In one, it’s demanded they provide modern, AI-driven user efficiencies. Fast entry, sharper reports, lightweight experiences. In the other, they’re required to lead the industry through a regulatory hot zone rigged with fair housing tripwires, consumer protection mandates and ongoing agent education. Executives and boards are in a perpetual defensive stance. But some see a way out of the melee through a unified front in the form of a connected, broker-agnostic federation of multiple listing services. Ideally, the effort would be linked by data standardization and the common goal of direct-to-consumer market transparency. Dan Troup is currently leading one such effort, a nonprofit entity called the Broker Public Portal (BPP). Troup oversees the BPP’s consumer-facing search experience, Cribio. The site is free from ads, fees and other commercial monetization efforts. Data flows directly from MLS partners around the country straight to the browsers of buyers and sellers.
