3500 SA homes in line for $36m energy overhaul

Vulnerable South Australians are set to receive a helping hand thanks to the Albanese Government’s commitment to upgrading about 3500 social housing properties across South Australia which will help reduce energy bills, allow them to enjoy warmer winters and cooler summers, and generally improve living conditions for those doing it tough. The $36.1m package under the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI) will include upgrades to SA’s social housing in the form of draught proofing, LED lighting, electric hot water systems, window glazing upgrades and ceiling insulation. Why? Well, at an average age of 46 years, SA’s Housing Trust homes are among the most energy inefficient properties in the state, being built before the introduction of minimum build standards. The installations will start this year, with all improvements to be completed by 2030.
