The four-bedroom house at 27 Blessington St, Newtown, sold for $1.46m at auction.
A young professional couple who are trading a trendy, inner Melbourne suburb for Geelong’s most blue ribbon pocket of real estate were the first at the doorstep to inspect the property.
The couple paid $1.46m for the renovated four-bedroom house at 27 Blessington St, Newtown just metres from one of the suburb’s most sought-after strips.
The house is metres from the wrought iron gates to Newtown’s Sacred Heart College.
But Buxton Newtown agent Tom Butters said the buyers were leaving inner Melbourne’s Brunswick East to be closer to the coast at Newtown.

More than $300,000 separates the median house price between these suburbs, the latest data from PropTrack shows.
But the pocket of Newtown is home to some of Geelong’s most well heeled, who enjoy the inner city location and proximity to prestigious private schools.
“We had two bidders, but I had two people standing in the crowd who didn’t get a chance to put their hand up,” Mr Butters said.
“It was an absolutely stunning little home in Blessington St. The vendors did such a beautiful job renovating it and presenting it. It had a really big turnout on the first day – we had 25 groups through the first day.”
The spacious living, kitchen and dining area opens on to the backyard.
A dual fuel cooker, feature lighting are among the features in the kitchen.
But the eventual buyers were first through the door, with the buyer visiting the address the evening before the first open before he flew interstate for work for the next three weeks, Mr Butters said.
“It was the only time he came to look at it. His wife came through the next day by herself. They were literally the first people through the door and they were the eventual buyers.”
The early 1900s home became a renovated four-bedroom, two bathroom residence showcasing high ceilings, baltic pine floorboards, elegant shutters and stained glass accents including an arched window on the front door.
The sellers paid $630,000 for the home in 2012.
At its heart is an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, with a gold accented double-mounted sink, a dual fuel oven and cooktop, integrated dishwasher and abundant storage, while the striking bathrooms and laundry were also renovated.
The lavish bathroom has a freestanding tub and in-site shower.
An ornate archway elevates the high ceilings in the house.
Mr Butters said the sellers had already bought another property as their children had finished at local schools.
“They wanted to settle before Christmas and they’ve achieved that,” he said.
“They have three kids – They’ve renovated it extensively without structurally changing it and maximised what they could get out of the home.”.
Renovated homes in the neighbourhood regularly sell from $1.4m to more than $2m, including landmark sales of close to $4m.
“The funny thing about Blessington St is you talk to people and you have to explain where it is. It’s 20m off Retreat Rd. You say Retreat Rd and everybody instantly jumps.”
Newtown’s median house price is $1.06m, according to PropTrack.
Meanwhile, Brunswick East, in Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs has a $1.38m median house price.
