Woman Accused of Shooting at Rihanna’s Beverly Hills Mansion Appears in Court for First Time: Suspect Faces Life in Prison If Convicted

The woman who is accused of firing an assault rifle at Rihanna's $14 million Beverly Hills mansion has appeared in court for the first time since entering a not guilty plea.

Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, appeared at Los Angeles Superior Court on April 8—one month after pleading not guilty to 14 charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly firing five to seven shots at the star's mansion while Rihanna was inside the property.

If convicted, Ortiz faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

According to The Sun, the suspect appeared in court wearing a yellow prison shirt and blue pants, and was seen smiling as she was led into the room by police.

Ortiz is facing several very serious charges: 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, three counts of shooting at an inhabited home, and one count of attempted murder.

Ortiz has been in custody since she was arrested and charged in the wake of the March 8 incident. Her bail was set at $1.87 million and, despite a request from a defense team to lower that figure, a judge determined at the end of March that it would remain set in place.

During Ortiz's April 8 courtroom appearance, Judge Shannon Cooley again determined that the bail amount would remain the same—while ruling that no photos can be taken inside the court.

Ortiz will have a preliminary hearing on May 13.

Rihanna has not yet issued a public statement about the shooting; however, she was seen flying out of Los Angeles on a private jet just hours after the incident took place.

Meanwhile, workers were seen carrying out repairs to the property in the aftermath of the shooting, which left several bullet holes in the entryway to the expansive property, where the singer lives with her partner, A$AP Rocky, and their three kids.

Ortiz, who is originally from Florida, stands accused of "driving up to the front of a home belonging to Rihanna in the 9500 block of Heather Road and firing a semiautomatic weapon multiple times at the house," according to a statement shared by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

The statement noted that "there were people on the musician’s property as well as an adjacent house, but no one was struck by gunfire."

The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed that Rihanna was inside the house when the incident took place at around 1:20 p.m. Between five and seven shots were reportedly fired by an "AR-15-style rifle," according to CNN.

She allegedly directed her shots at the house, however, all of them hit the singer's gate, rather than the home itself.

Prosecutors have alleged that the shooting was "willful, deliberate, and premeditated," according to a complaint obtained by People.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman has previously decried the crime, noting that the shooter had put "lives at risk," including those who live in Rihanna's neighborhood.

“Opening fire in any populated neighborhood is extremely dangerous, puts lives at risk and will be fully prosecuted,” he previously said in a statement. “Thankfully, no one was injured in this shooting, but this careless violence will not be tolerated in our community. Such shooters will find their next destination to be our jails and prisons.”

While Rihanna is known to have been inside the home at the time of the shooting, it's unclear whether her children or partner were with her, although a source previously told the New York Post that A$AP was not home at the time.

The "SOS" singer shares three children with her partner: sons RZA Athelston Mayers, 3, and Riot Rose Mayers, 4, and a daughter named Rocki Irish Mayers, who was born this past September.

The LAPD told Fox News that officers initially responded to a "ADW (assault with a deadly weapon) shots fired," noting that their audio dispatch described the incident as "10 shots" fired from "across the street."

According to the Daily Mail, Ortiz made threats to Rihanna in the days leading up to the shooting. The outlet also revealed that Ortiz had previously been arrested on domestic violence, careless driving, and violating pretrial release conditions in Florida.

Rihanna and A$AP have been living at the Beverly Hills property since 2020, when they purchased it for $13.8 million. It is believed to serve as their primary residence.

The 7,600-square-foot mansion boasts five bedrooms and is near the Beverly Hills Hotel and Sunset Boulevard.

It features an open floor plan with French oak flooring, a chef's kitchen, a cocktail bar, and formal living and family rooms. The primary bedroom has sensational views and a spa bathroom that opens to a private outdoor area.

The house was built in 1938 and has been modernized over the years. It now offers a contemporary design combined with traditional style.

A$AP previously owned another $4 million home nearby, which he bought in 2015. That house was the site of an April 2022 raid carried out by police investigating shooting allegations being levied against him.

During the trial, the jury was shown images taken during the raid, with video footage revealing that officers used a battering ram to gain access to the gated dwelling, which is located on a leafy street lined with luxury properties.

Police removed multiple boxes of evidence from the home as well as several guns, which did not match the one used in the shooting, according to TMZ, which later published images of several U-Haul trucks leaving the home.

The house was sold for $3.95 million months before Rihanna gave birth to their third child. The 6,506-square-foot property featured five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
