Wild way buyer smashes suburb record by almost $3m

A stunning Carrickalinga beachside residence has smashed property records in the holiday hotspot by almost $3m, prompting a stream of real estate inquiries from curious locals wanting to know if their homes could fetch a similar sum.

Just moments from what Lonely Planet once crowned South Australia’s best beach, 95 Gold Coast Drive has sold at auction for a staggering $4.1m.

The sale easily eclipsed the previous property benchmark of $1.25m, set last November by a four-bedroom home that boasts ocean views but is located considerably further from the beach.

Selling agent John Lewis, from Ouwens Casserly Real Estate, admitted even he was shocked at the final selling price for dual-level home, which enjoys an absolute beachfront location.

“I had the feeling that something good was going to happen,’’ he said.

“I had that feeling in the tummy that we could be onto something better than expected – but not to that level.

“I thought (the property would sell in the) low threes ($3m range). I didn’t ever think it would get to mid threes, so it was definitely a surprise.’’

The home, with a quirky, red front entry door, offers independent living across each of its upper and lower levels.

Upstairs, a cantilevered living area with floor to ceiling windows “feels like you are almost floating over the beach’’, Mr Lewis said.

The main kitchen has stone benchtops and an expansive breakfast bar, while there’s also large front and rear balconies, two generous bedrooms and a modern bathroom.

Downstairs, there are two more bedrooms, another bathroom and a living area with a kitchenette.

Mr Lewis said a local family managed to outbid four other interested buyers, including two who were “very active’’ right until the final moments when the hammer fell.

He said while the successful buyer did not intend to live at the home full-time, they were expected to visit “quite often’’.

“They have a fairly good-sized family and probably a very close network of friends that will all enjoy the property for many, many years to come,’’ Mr Lewis said.

He said the auction attracted many local onlookers who, after witnessing the result, had contacted him seeking an appraisal of their own properties.

“Whether the motivation is there to sell or not, I don’t know. I think it’s more just out of curiosity for what might be possible,’’ Mr Lewis said.

“The (property market at Carrickalinga) was seen to be a little flat in the last six months but it just goes to show that the right property, in the right location, can still certainly surprise

people.’’
