Thousands of eyes have been on this shagadelic prize in coveted West Hobart.
While the wallpaper and carpets are an adventure — “a glorious kaleidoscope of colour that Austin Powers himself would be proud of!” — the family-sized home’s elevated position, good bones and enviable school zone ensure it was always going to be popular with purchasers.
No.8 Sheldon Pl was Tasmania’s most-viewed home of the past week on realestate.com.au, and Ripple Realty director Mel Shutt said there are a number of reasons for the buzz that it generated.
In the first week, well over 4000 people clicked its online listing. And offline, it has been equally popular, Mrs Shutt said, with tons of calls and inspections.

“The position is amazing,” she said.
“I sold one nearby, and at the time thought it was the best view in Hobart. But I think No.8 is actually the best view I have seen.
“It is more than 180 degrees, across the rooftops and out to the water.”
Mrs Shutt said the four-bedroom property was built in the 1970s and has never been sold.
She said the “untouched” condition of the home was appealing to buyers.
“It has some amazing features, it is quite an individual property that reflects the flair and personality of the owners,” she said.

“There is a curved staircase with timber panelling; and an in-built fish tank in the staircase, too.
“It has got the most amazing carpet throughout, and gold paint, and textured wallpaper — it is like stepping back in time.
“The downstairs area offers a rumpus and space for a bathroom. It is a blank canvas.
“There are a lot of opportunities to develop and reimagine the property.”

The floorplan includes a spacious open-plan living area on the top level.
Natural light pours into the lounge and dining space through sliding doors that open to a balcony. The view from here takes in the bridge, casino, Mt Direction, Bruny Island and beyond.
There are bedrooms on both levels, with the upper floor housing the master, with a built-in wardrobe and an ensuite.

Potential buyers for the property have been wide-ranging.
“It starts with people who are hunting for a project,” Mrs Shutt said.
“Some groups are looking to contemporise this property, while others love the style of the home and would work around some of the original features of the home.”
No.8 Sheldon Pl, West Hobart is for sale with Ripple Realty. It is priced at “Offers over $895,000”.
