Sinuous and sensuous, the curves and contours of this spectacular contemporary residence ensure the brilliance of the built space match the natural beauty of the setting.
This was architect David Luck’s description — for the Tasmanian Architecture Awards — of his virtually transparent house in Dilston, about a 15-minute drive from Launceston.
Dubbed River Rocks, the property at No.279 John Lees Dr features a unique design that, from above, resembles a question mark, but from the side features 250 thin steel columns.
This unique home also has a grass roof.
“This project encompasses my energy and life force,” the architect said.
“After thousands of hours crafting the components like the handmade steel frame to hundreds of metres of surfaces, the project is a liveable sculpture.
“River Rocks … stands as an unsullied symbol of architecture’s power.”

Listed for sale with Peter Dehnert and Sam Woolcock from Elders Real Estate Launceston, the agents describe River Rocks as “remarkable in every imaginable way”.
“It would have to be right up there among the most unique homes in Australia,” Mr Dehnert said.
“The current owner has breathed warmth and life into the house.
“He has made it a comfortable place to live, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, full ducted heating and cooling, a new pool area, landscaping, terracing and rock walls.
“He has opened it up to the river, making the most of one of the best views of the valley.”

‘Trophy’: Hobart waterfront building attracts global interest
When the current owner purchased the property a few years ago, his attraction to this boldly designed home linked to natural bush surroundings was instant.
“He describes the property as being charismatic,” Mr Dehnert said.
“Really, the property is only on the market because a wonderful career opportunity has presented itself.
“He bought River Rocks after falling in love with its design and the location.
“While there are other houses nearby, this 1.2ha property is extremely private.
“And it takes advantage of the enticing environment that is found in this part of the Tamar.”

River Rocks is an architectural statement and an achievement in engineering.
It features a series of steel columns and spectacular 3m x 1m double-glazed windows that ensure every light-filled room reaches out to watch the water.
The benefit of consistent light and extraordinary views complements two individually-zoned living domains, linked by a courtyard that delivers effective cross ventilation.
Above, grassed topsoil covers the roof, creating significant natural insulation and a substantial solar mass.
Only four years old, this six-star energy-rated house has huge living spaces, enhanced by a sunken kitchen.
The main bedroom has a private terrace that creates an outdoor zone of its own.
The recently installed commercial ducted heating and cooling system ensures an even year-round living temperature under all weather conditions.

It operates under two separate zones to maximise comfort and minimise operating costs.
There is also a superb French Cheminees Philippe wood combustion heater to add to the natural comforts of home.
Outdoors, extensive alfresco decking is provided for entertaining or simply to enjoy the sunny surroundings.
A separate recreational area and swimming pool pull the natural environs into clearer, sharper perspective.
Away from the main house there is a huge new 100sq m Colorbond shed with remote door access. The shed has power and water.
No.279 John Lees Dr, Dilston will be sold by expressions of interest.
