Virgin Music Australia managing director Tim Janes and his family have listed 55 Barkley St, Fitzroy North.

A Virgin Music Australia boss has pitched his cool Fitzroy North family home for sale at $2.15m-$2.35m.

Record label managing director Tim Janes has worked with some of Australia’s most well-known indie music artists including Good Morning, Amyl and The Sniffers, C.W. Stoneking, Xavier Rudd, Parcels and Marlon Williams, as well as internationally-acclaimed acts such as Mac DeMarco, Phoenix, Clairo and Glass Animals.

Mr Janes has spent more than 20 years in the Australian music industry, previously at the former independent record label Shock Records in Northcote.

His Victorian-era, four-bedroom house at 55 Barkly St features a living and dining area with polished concrete floors and custom steel doors and windows, plus a kitchen with 900mm cooking appliances and a Bosch dishwasher.

Other highlights include the main bedroom fitted with a walk-in wardrobe, two bathrooms, timber floors, plantation shutters, a European laundry and attic storage space.

Mr Janes said the abode had undergone a double-storey extension about 15 years ago, as his family expanded.

“I love the north-facing backyard, it’s a quiet oasis and totally private,” he said.

“And our back room is light-filled and is the hub of all of our family and social hangs – with its high ceilings and wall of windows and doors, it’s always full of light no matter the season.”

His music mementos, such as plaques for Mac DeMarco, Phoenix, Clairo and Glass Animals, hang in the home office.

The residence is within walking distance, or a short car ride, to famous Melbourne live music venues including the Punters Club, Night Cat, Northcote Social Club, The Croxton, The Evelyn and Northcote Theatre.

“We’re so spoilt and it’s been so convenient living here being in my line of work,” Mr Janes said.

Cafes, bars, restaurants, Westgarth Cinema, Merri Creek and public transport are also nearby, with the number 96 and 11 tram routes stopping at the end of the street.

The kitchen is equipped with stone-topped benches, 900mm cooking appliances and a Bosch dishwasher.

Nelson Alexander’s Nic Exarchos said the house had attracted strong interest from families and couples.

“The feedback has been consistently positive around the sense of space, which surprises many people when they walk through the front door,” Mr Exarchos said.

“It’s a home with real character, but it’s also incredibly functional.”

Mr Exarchos said well-renovated Victorian addresses were always sought after in Fitzroy North but finding one that combined period character with a substantial extension, four bedrooms, multiple living zones and a north-facing rear yard was rare.

“Buyers are increasingly looking for homes that don’t require further work and allow them to enjoy everything Fitzroy North has to offer from day one, and I think 55 Barkly St delivers exactly that,” the agent said.

The house will be auctioned at midday on June 27.
