The four-bedroom house at 17 Anderson St, Torquay, sold for $2.45m.

Homebuyers can do away with their car and Surf Coast holiday house after landing a rare character residence just off the main drag in Torquay.

The four-bedroom renovated period residence at 17 Anderson St sold for $2.45m after an eight-month campaign to find a new owner.

The historic home and 426sq m block was once part of a much larger old Torquay property, before the original property was carved up and the home renovated.

The original property, which once stretched across 1349sq m, offered a big slice of Torquay history as Anita’s Guesthouse consisting of nine separate rooms and a shop, home to Pat Morgan’s surfboard shop in the 1960s, and originally Pescud’s butcher shop from early last century.

The vendors had owned the classic character home for 11 years, McCartney Torquay selling agent Tim Carson said.

“It took a little longer to sell, probably because of the state of the market and the price point,” Mr Carson said.

“It’s a beautiful home that had been subdivided off several times a while ago there.”

The house boasts high decorated ceilings, polished timber floorboards in a floorplan that caters for family living and entertaining.

The expansive open-plan living and dining space is framed by large north-facing windows, while the kitchen takes centre stage with a butler’s pantry and bespoke timber benchtops.

“It was built in 1945 but was really tastefully updated with beautiful pressed metal ceilings inside, and it had a really good feel,” Mr Carson said.

“The couple that have bought it are going to move down to Torquay on a permanent basis. “They had a holiday home here already and they just loved the style of it.”

The property’s front gate is just 300m from the sand at Torquay’s front beach.

“It’s a super location – you’ve got your electronic gates, you can park in there and then you’ve got your own little privacy,” Mr Carson said.

“You can walk to the beach, walk to the shops – everything – you don’t even need a car, really, to be there.”

The house offers three ground floor bedrooms, including a suite with an ensuite, with a main bedroom retreat upstairs including a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

Another bedroom could be a flexible second living area featuring a gas log fire.
