Car racer and enthusiast Scott Shearman is selling the Toorak apartment building he bought out to house his car collection, with hopes of a $10m deal.

The son of Bob Shearman, who played in VFL premiership matches with the Essendon Football Club in 1957 and 1959, the younger Shearman is known for a love of classic cars.

He also raced a Porsche 996 against a Holden Monaro driven by Peter Brock in the final Batthurst 24 Hour race event in 2003.

In 2018, the multi-millionaire purchased Wappenbury Hall in the United Kingdom — the former residence of British luxury car firm Jaguar’s co-founder Sir William Lyons.

He’s now selling a $9m-$9.9m 212A Kooyong Rd apartment building he spent a number of years and more than $6.5m buying out all the residences for, with records indicating a company linked to his nearby home address owns the property.

Being sold as a single entity, the mansion-sized complex includes eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms and carparking for 16 — including a double-storey basement with room for 10 cars, as well as a gym, wine cellar, media room and space to store an art collection if desired.

Toorak locals have reported the property has been largely used as a space to keep Shearman’s car collection in recent years, with images from the listing showing some of the classic vehicles.

Other unusual features include a third-floor balcony lap pool, and a mosaic artwork of a sculptural face in the shower of one of the property’s bathrooms.

Records show the building was bought piecemeal, with No. 3 last sold for $2.16m in December 2014.

In April of 2019 the residence at No. 1 is marked as sold for $2.25m, and three months later No. 2 was purchased for $2.25m.

Christies International Real Estate Victoria’s Sean Cussell is handling the sale, and while he would not comment on the property’s ownership, he said its basement had been used to store a car collection, which was now off site, and it was possible the next owner would be looking to do something similar.

Upper floors are being sold empty of furniture, but full of class with timber floors.


“It’s a very unique offering,” Mr Cussell said.

“The owner has consolidated the whole building by buying all three whole-floor apartments and they have been able to get both levels of basement into the one ownership.

“It’s also beautifully built and quite timeless.”

In addition to car collectors, the agent said multigenerational families, or even an investor looking for a place to live with an income stream in the same building could wind up purchasing the complex.

Expressions of interest for 212A Kooyong Rd are due by November 22.
