Western Australian pub steeped in history

Believed to be Western Australia's first licensed premises, the heritage-listed 1852-built Albany Hotel is seeking a new custodian.

Listed for sale with an asking price of $2.95 million, owner and listing agent Russell Poliwka from First Western Realty said there has been good interest in the property, which has a rich history.

“It just needs somebody with a few dollars to buy it and bring it back to its former glory,” he said.

The grand historic building is set on a 957sqm land parcel within the heart of Albany’s main street, and its current lease expires in June.

Highlights of the venue include a bar and dining room, a pressed tin bar, an original brick fireplace, guest room accommodation, a manager’s living quarters and two alfresco areas.

There is also the option to buy a 310sqm block to the rear of the hotel.

According to the Heritage Council of WA, the Albany Hotel played an important role in the entertainment and food industry since its inception.

Its statement of significance notes that the hotel “is one of the oldest still existing licenced hotels in Albany and one of the first built.”

It notes that an interesting anecdote found in a guest book from circa 1900 contains an entry by Herbert Hoover, “Not dead, but sleeping”, who went on to become the United States' 31st President from 1929 to 1933.

Sales agent Taylor Morris from CBRE Hotels said the renovation has completely refreshed the establishment.

“He reopened it for the community and rebranded it to be the Julatten Hotel that it is today,” she said.

“We think it's a really perfect opportunity for a hands-on owner operator to really get in there and drive performance.”

The hotel features a public bar, outdoor bar, dining areas, undercover decked areas, as well as two self-contained, Balinese inspired cabins.

The offering also includes an opportunity for future expansion with scope for up to 20 cabins, and room for possible camping grounds, or revamping storage areas into a boutique distillery or cellar door.
