The Block 2024 episode 20 bedroom reveal: ‘I feel panic’ —boys fail to finish yet again

1 month ago 17

Despite leaving the judges breathless, swooning and even declaring they were thinking about bidding on one of the houses themselves, nobody came out of main bedroom week an outright winner.

Because Kylie once again refused to play her bonus point penguin, Mimi and Kristian and Courtney and Grant ended up tying for first place. They now must split the $10,000 prize and, adding insult to injury, were told there would be no special night away with Scott Cam to enjoy.

“It’s like in the footy when its full time and it’s a draw. You haven’t lost but you don’t feel like you’ve won,” Kristian moped.

While glad to get some cash, neither couple was keen to share their big moment with someone else. And as for Kylie, she claimed to be happy to have held on to her precious penguin but her scowl told a different story.

At least Kylie has finally found her groove (or at least a version of her moody aesthetic that the judges don’t despise).

Her gold wall-papered ceiling had been a risky move and one that Foreman Dan had earlier failed to understand, planting seeds of doubt about whether her choice would strike gold with the judges.

She needn’t have worried. Darren Palmer was “in love” with Kylie and Brad’s “moody, sophisticated suite”. He was “so excited for them” that he almost leaped in the air.

Darren became even more breathless with excitement when he wandered into the wardrobe and marvelled at its metallic ceiling, sighing: “It’s like walking into a jewellery box”.

“I just love it in here. It feels so opulent and luxurious.”

Shaynna Blaze and Marty Fox, who have been the couple’s biggest critics, also liked what they saw.

“I’m over the moon for them because I feel like they’ve met us in the middle,” Shyanna said, refusing to admit that Kylie’s funereal style had grown on her.

She even complimented the room’s feng shui before breaking into a bizarre piece of role play pretending to be the owner of the room – aka “a man in a burgundy smoking jacket who has just been to see Tom Ford”.

Inexplicably, all three judges loved Kylie’s ugly homemade lamp, with Marty saying it should have been the winning effort.

“They must have been on drugs,” Scotty smirked.

The trio were less enamoured with Courtney’s homemade lamp. After shivering with delight and exclaiming “Aww, yum! It’s visceral. I can feel this room,” an elated Darren spotted the sad, lopsided papier mâché lamp and said it was right to plonk it in the “naughty corner”.

Cam took things a step further (and down market), offering his own frank assessment of Courtney’s handywork.

“You can’t polish a turd but you can put glitter on it,” he said, with the sort of delight you see on a preschooler’s face when they engage in a bit of toilet humour.

It wasn’t so much the lamp that had Marty poo-pooing. He was left underwhelmed by the fireplace, which he felt cheapened the room. Apparently fake flames are on the ever-lengthening list of features he can’t stand.

Despite the faux fire faux pas, Marty declared Courtney and Grant’s room the “most marketable” (which is the greatest compliment a real estate agent can bestow), marvelling at their workmanship.

He has become so enamoured with the house that he is contemplating seeking permission from Channel 9 to bid on it.

“This couple is operating in a league of their own,” he said. “I am in love with this house.”

There was more swooning over at Mimi and Kristian’s place, which Marty said was “the most hotel like”.

“It’s not just great, it’s excellent,” Darren added, though this time he didn’t appear to have any sort of physical reaction to what he saw.

Shaynna on the other hand, gushed, approvingly: “It takes my breath away!”

Even the lowest scoring rooms managed to get some love from the judges. After seeing what newcomers Maddy and Charlotte had managed in three short days, the trio were impressed (and that was without knowing how much time the poor women had spent on inane challenges or hunting for new plasterers).

Marty felt the girls’ aesthetic would compliment the rooms already completed by Jesse and Paige.

“From what I am seeing here, Maddy and Charlotte could be real contenders to take out the competition,” Marty said before declaring that the sisters’ style was more “elevated” than their predecessors.

Shaynna, of course, wasn’t having a bar of that. Rolling her eyes, she said: “right, so beige is elevated.”

Darren was also on team bland, enthusing “there’s always a place for beige and beige”.

“A misstep would be to completely ignore the past and whitewash it with your own style but they haven’t, they’ve taken elements from it and I think if they continue with that in the living spaces, they will be on to a winner.”

They saved their harshest words for Ricky and Haydn’s “unfinished symphony”.

Yet again the boys weren’t able to present a completed room. Mistakenly ordering carpets instead of floorboards had cost them precious time to rectify at the 11th hour (unlike Grant, they hadn’t opted out of the challenge to keep their room on track).

Shaynna spotted the floor problems, arguing that using carpet in the wardrobe was a mistake.

Darren also had concerns about their wardrobes having no doors, leaving clothing exposed to steam from the ensuite.

“I am concerned about their attention to detail,” Shaynna nodded. “I feel panic in these rooms.”

Shaynna urged the guys to step up their efforts because “This is a competition not a game”.
