The Block 2024 episode 12 bathroom reveal: Mimi and Kristian, Kylie and Brad cop a roasting from judges

Block bridesmaids, Courtney and Grant, have finally taken out their first win with a “sexy patchwork” bathroom that wowed the judges (and gave Darren Palmer an opportunity to flaunt his muscles somewhere other than his Instagram account).

Fittingly the Sydneysiders, who have come second to Mimi and Kristian by half a point both weeks, nudged out comeback kids Jesse and Paige by a half a point.

Shaynna Blaze was particularly wowed by Courtney and Grant’s tiling. Despite Grant’s doubts about Courtney’s mismatched blend of finger tile splashback, checkerboard floors and marble accents, Shaynna marvelled that the influencer had created a look she had not seen before.

“It looks phenomenal,” Shaynna exclaimed. “They come together and they tell the story.”

Darren added that the colour palette reflected the natural surrounds of Phillip Island’s landscape. But he also saw the problem with the shower, seizing the opportunity to showcase the fact his bulging biceps couldn’t fit through the narrow entryway.

This would become a trick he would later perform again in Kylie and Brad’s shower entry (spoiler: he slipped through without any issues from his rig) and again in Mimi and Kristian’s dominating party shower (once again, no drama caused by his torso).

After back-to-back wins, Mimi and Kristian’s streak was well and truly over, with all three judges less than impressed with the couple’s efforts.

What they had hoped would be their wow factor, a double shower with seating, instead became their downfall.

“That shower is literally 3cm from the door jam,” real estate agent Marty Fox said as Darren once again offered to use his body as a measurement tool.

“That’s got to be one of the biggest errors. I have never seen such a big useless shower.”

Having previously loved Mimi’s kitsch styling, Shyanna said it was becoming “naff” and “clichéd” to see penguin figurines and whales’ tails in the mix.

Agreeing with Shaynna’s assessments, Marty said, after back-to-back wins, the couple should have had the budget to create a showstopping room.

“But maybe they got a bit arrogant. Maybe they got a bit too cocky,” he shrugged. As Darren chimed in with “complacency.”

He was right in the case of Mimi who had wasted precious final hours having another few hours on the sauce with Courtney and Grant rather than helping her husband get the job done. Then, to his chagrin, she went and slept off the booze, leaving him to soldier on.

“This is a real drop of the ball for the winners of the previous rooms,” Marty said.

“It’s a real let-down and on such an important room for the sale of the house. It just shows how quickly your momentum can shift.”

Nobody knows that better than Ricky and Haydn who, after a series of disasters, parted ways with their builders, were forced to present an unfinished room.

The boys were prepared for their “Sunday roasting” and were unsurprised to be awarded a measly total of four out of a possible 30 points for their work.

Believe it or not, this isn’t even the worst score. Way back in 2017, Jason and Sarah were given zero marks for their master suite. But I digress.

Shaynna has declared the term “master” has no place in modern homes and that hence forth they would be saying main bedroom and bathroom instead.

“Because no-one is the master of me,” she declared. Good to know, Shaynna.

Despite the terrible week, and their lowly scores, Ricky and Haydn are feeling optimistic now that a hero has come along in the shape of their new builder, Block veteran Duncan Miller.

If there’s anyone who can get the boys back on track, and enjoy a laugh and beer along the way, it’s the laid-back Duncan.

Alongside his best mate Mark Bowyer, Duncan has competed on the show twice, first in 2010 and then again as an All Star in 2013. He returned again in 2022 to build Scott Cam’s side project build.

Why would he sign on again?

“Poor Ricky really sounded like he needed a hand and I know what it feels like to be on The Block and not be in a good place,” Duncan explained.

“So, we agreed to me doing this for three to four weeks because I have never experienced what it’s like to be a builder for a team on The Block before. The only thing I didn’t want to do is paint.”

The boys were elated to see Duncan arrive.

“I don’t know how many movies I have seen where they are in major need of reinforcements and they chopper them in, so it felt quite movie-esque,” Ricky remarked as his new builder arrived via helicopter.

Jesse and Paige’s main ensuite bathroom won points for being nice, and also finished.

Things were also looking up for Paige and Jesse, who not only completed their first bathroom but won the first 10 of the competition, Darren giving them a perfect score for their efforts.

Host Scott Cam told the elated pair that the last couple Darren awarded 10 points to went on to win The Block before promising the milestone would come with a secret prize.

Likewise, Kylie and Brad finally got some positive reinforcement for their work. Although nothing is ever black and white, except for Kylie’s tiling.

While the trio universally loved the timber feature wall, Shaynna was unimpressed by their styling (which, in fairness, was a bland bath mat strewn on the floor) and was once again scathing about their art deco vibe.

“I want to tell them, stop with the art deco. Just STOP it!” she said. “We are in Phillip Island we are not in Art Deco Land.”

She also took aim at that expensive black tub, arguing people would fall over it when they attempted to have a shower.

“I am beyond nervous for this couple now. I feel like they are lost,” she said.

Because nothing helps someone find their way more than telling them they are lost with no clear directions on where to go.
