The opening of a new international terminal has long been in the works for a region that's poised for "a serious uplift in buyer interest".
In late September 2025, Newcastle Airport officially opened its upgraded international terminal – a move that will see direct flights to Bali begin in late October.
Just 25 minutes from Newcastle’s CBD, the airport has long been a vital connector for the Hunter region. This $110 million terminal, which has been under construction since 2023, means residents will soon have access to overseas destinations with ease, offering a gateway to the rest of the world.

Raine & Horne Commercial Newcastle managing director Brad Wallace said the international expansion is a pivotal moment for the Hunter region.
“There’s no doubt international flights and high-speed trains between Sydney and Newcastle will boost demand, not just in Newcastle, but the entire Hunter region,” Mr Wallace said.
“It’s already easier and more relaxing to fly from Williamtown than Mascot. Add international flights, and we’re looking at a serious uplift in property buyer interest across our region.”
With that increased interest, the city needs to grow. Several new land estates in the surrounding areas are accommodating Newcastle’s population growth and offering easy access to Newcastle Airport. Here are some of the developments nearby.
The Stables
Just 15 minutes from Newcastle Airport, The Stables Estate by Australis Properties is positioned for buyers seeking a balance of city, coast and country living.
Fully-serviced lots range from 500sqm to 885sqm with frontages between 15 and 27 metres. The location places residents 30 minutes from Newcastle’s CBD, 30 minutes to the beaches of Port Stephens, 15 minutes to the University of Newcastle, 40 minutes to the Hunter Valley and under two hours to Sydney.
Sophia Waters
Further west in Chisholm, Sophia Waters by Allam Property Group offers more than 900 lots ranging from 400 to 800sqm, taking advantage of elevated positions and open space with extensive landscaping.

The estate sits between Raymond Terrace and Maitland, and is also a short drive to Newcastle Airport. Nearby amenities include the new Maitland Hospital and various community facilities. Maitland Council has proposed future playing fields, walking and cycling paths within the estate — adding appeal for families and active buyers.
Waterford
Also in Chisholm is Waterford, a masterplanned community by AVID Property Group designed for both natural and connected living.
Less than 30 minutes from Newcastle Airport, new lots in the Woodhaven release range from 570 to 900sqm and are within walking distance of parklands, reserves and future sports fields. Residents also have access to 7km of walking and bike paths, a café, two preschools, a primary and high school.
Plans for the upcoming Chisholm Plaza include supermarkets, more cafés, a swim school and gym.
Its strategic location allows easy travel to Newcastle and Maitland via train, or by road using the Pacific Highway, New England Highway and the Hunter Expressway.
