Sydney pub baron family at war

It’s long known that mixing business with family can be problematic but that’s especially so, it seems, for a prominent Sydney pub baron clan.

The De Angelis family owns hotels worth mega millions in Sydney’s west.

But they’re in the courts: four siblings fighting over a bit of beer money: claims of unpaid levies for just $7,128 and $6,344 at a $6m Gold Coast penthouse they all share.

And the matriach, Robyn De Angelis, in a legal dispute with her brother, the 84-year-old billionaire pub baron, Arthur Laundy, alleging he was trying to defy their late mother’s wishes, short-changing her over earnings from the family’s Bass Hill pub, The Twin Willows Hotel.

Mr Laundy is strongly disputing the claims of his 78-year-old sister and the matter is back before the Federal Court of Australia next month.

Same goes for the siblings’ feud, resuming in the Queensland Supreme Court next month, and being fiercely defended.

Nicole De Angelis-Hood and her brother Phillip are suing their two brothers, Peter, who used to go out with Golden Bachelor host Samantha Armytage, and Marc De Angelis.

They’re trying to get trustees appointed to sell the high-rise apartment at Main Beach.

The Gold Coast City Council has allegedly sent final notices for unpaid rates, water and sewerage bills at the 1,100sqm penthouse.

The siblings have apparently been at loggerheads for more than a year over a range of issues regarding the apartment, bought from their parents, in 2010 for $2.5m.

Peter has previously told the Queensland court he’d paid most of the bills since July 2023 — $226,087 — while Marc had paid $30,000, Nicole $19,552 and Phillip $26,552.

The penthouse has views up and down the coast and is in a luxury development with pool, sauna and tennis court.

Their last court appearance was last month and they’ve been trying to resolve the matter before another one set for next month.

Meanwhile, the parents, Arch De Angelis and Robyn De Angelis, are reportedly stuck in the middle of a separate legal stoush in the NSW Supreme Court with some of their kids.

Arch, Nicole, her husband Brendan Hood and Phillip are said to be up against Robyn and Peter, alleging Robyn and Peter have breached their directors’ duties in operating companies that run the family pubs.

The dispute understood to be over revenue, with Arch’s side asking the court to account for all their dealings and transactions.

The NSW matter isn’t back before the court until September 28, though the QLD matter has a February 3 court date.

The family’s pubs include the Moorebank Hotel, Edmondson Park Tavern, Burwood’s Bath Arms Hotel, Yagoona’s Hume Highway Hotel, Glebe’s Ancient Briton Hotel and Raby’s Rose Hotel.

While the family pubs are in Sydney’s west, the siblings reside in luxury property elsewhere, with Nicole in a $15m Woolwich waterfront with its own private beach; Phillip at his parents’ $20m mansion Hunters Hill mansion; Marc in another waterfront and Peter in exclusive Darling Point,

Wouldn’t you think this could all have been resolved over a Christmas lunch at one of their many pubs?
