An esteemed doctor remembered for her passion for education has donated the sale proceeds of her Sydney house, worth an estimated $7.5 million, to The Smith Family charity to help children in need.
Cardiovascular physician, researcher and scientist Dr Karen Duggan passed away in 2024, and wanted the proceeds of her Clovelly home sale to go to The Smith Family.
The two-storey house at 9 Surfside Avenue, Clovelly will head to auction on February 14, with a price guide of $7.5 million.
The 778sqm property is said to be one of only a handful of properties with direct access to the Clovelly beach via a nature reserve with the sand, sea and ocean pool quite literally footsteps from the back door.
Real estate agents Alexander Phillips and Thomas Fuller of PPD Real Estate are also donating their commissions to the charity.
Mr Fuller said Dr Duggan’s philanthropic act would help set up future generations.

“She was a philanthropist and an amazing woman,” he said.
“The Smith Family estimates that the donation will help educate 1000 young people over the next five years that otherwise wouldn't be.”
He said the house had been very popular, with the sale campaign attracting plenty of interest already.

“If you look at Clovelly, there's only a handful of properties that have direct access to the beach like that, so it's quite a scarce property,” Mr Fuller said.
“It’s also one of the biggest residential or house and land holdings in Clovelly, so to have a large land holding that close to the beach, it’s definitely well desired.”
Known as 'Caleula', the freestanding double-fronted house comes with five generous bedrooms, including a newly renovated two-bedroom apartment at the garden level.

It offers multiple living and dining zones, bi-fold doors opening to a large terrace, and an elegant Carrara marble kitchen.
The listing said the original period character was complemented by contemporary functionality, creating a home that was both timeless and immediately liveable.

Clovelly’s median house price has increased 16.2% to $5.405 million during the year to December, according to PropTrack.
Dr Duggan was remembered in public tributes as a “world leading” nephrologist – specialising in kidney health – and an outstanding cardiovascular physician and researcher.
She was Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of NSW from 1995 to 2008 and served on the advisory committees for the National Heart Foundation, NSW Department of Health and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.
Dr Duggan co-founded Vectus Biosystems, focusing on treatments for fibrosis and high blood pressure.
The Smith Family is a national children’s education charity helping young Australians experiencing disadvantage by harnessing the power of education.
