Some surprise buyer demographics have emerged for a unique converted church in Prospect, breaking away from the family groups that usually seek out these popular properties.

Turner Real Estate’s AnnaMaria Varelias, who is selling a converted church at 20 Clifton St, Prospect, said most of the interest she had received had come from young professionals, singles and downsizers.

See, while most churches are converted into grand family homes, this property has been converted into two executive-style apartments.

“It’s a niche market and I’ve seen a few international buyers moving back from overseas and we’ve had lots of young professionals, singles and downsizers,” Ms Valerias says.

“There have been quite a few people wanting to own a church, but whenever they’ve been looking they’ve been right out in the boondocks and not in the city at all.

“The most popular feature, aside from the way it’s been remodelled, is its location – it’s walking distance to North Adelaide and the city and the hub of prospect, so people can live here without a car.”

Ms Varelias said the property had attracted a lot of attention online and all of those through inspections had been “blown away by how lovely it looks inside”.

“It’s so modern, and it really is superb,” she said.

The building itself has a rich history – starting out as St Cuthbert’s Anglican Church in 1883 and later became a pharmacy before being remodelled into two residences, 20 and 20a.

The home offers some 180.8sqm of indoor and outdoor living space.

On the ground floor you’ll find an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, and a bedroom, while upstairs is a master suite with an ensuite; a bathroom with a separate bathe and shower; and a 2.4m x 3.5m study area.

As beautiful as the home is, Ms Valerias says its location was probably its strongest selling feature.

“It’s on the heritage precinct of Prospect, so it’s really close to Medindie and in probably the nicest tree-lined street, and if you drive up the street you’re in Fitzroy,” she said.

“I’ve got a couple of people who have advised that they’re going to be registering, but it’s all about what happens on the day.”

The property will be auctioned 11am Saturday.
