Before Margie and Tim Pumpa hit the road for the first time, they made the same mistake almost every caravanning family makes: they budgeted for the obvious costs and forgot about almost everything else.

Six years and countless kilometres later, the Adelaide-based travel writers – who document their adventures at margieandtim.com.au and on Instagram at @margieandtim – have mapped out every hidden cost that catches families off guard, and the list is longer than most people expect.

“Are you planning a long holiday, or a lifestyle change?” the pair write in their free Ultimate Caravan Adventure Planning Guide. “If you’re planning on living as you do at home, working or spending the most amount of time on the road, then you’ll be wiser with your money. If your mindset is ‘holiday’, then plan to spend a heap more.”

Speaking to Yahoo News, Ms Pumpa said the family ran on $700 a week for a family of four – covering petrol, food, accommodation and all miscellaneous costs – well below the $1,500 to $2,500 she says most travelling families spend.

The single biggest surprise for most travellers, she said is the laundromat

According to the pair’s guide, at $5 per wash, two loads of everyday clothes, one load of sheets and one load of towels adds up to $20 extra per week before drying costs are even factored in.

In practice it can be far worse: “We went to Western Australia on our last trip, and I genuinely had no idea laundromats were that expensive. $2 here, $4 there and suddenly there’s $50 gone.”

Caravan maintenance is the other budget killer most families underestimate. “Stuff goes wrong, you divert to get it fixed and one small problem snowballs,” Ms Pumpa said. The guide flags wheel bearings and car services as costs that “catch people unawares.”

Then there are the bills that do not pause just because you have left home – mortgage or rent, insurance, pest inspection, alarm services and health cover. “These need to be factored into your weekly cost,” the guide states plainly.

Technology costs catch people off guard too – phone plans, Starlink subscriptions and emergency beacon registrations are rarely budgeted for. Then there is the servo problem. “The $30 ice cream run at the servo somehow turns into chips and drinks, and before you know it there’s an extra $30,” Ms Pumpa said. The guide recommends buying a bulk pack of ice creams from Woolworths and keeping them in a freezer on board.

In the Ningaloo area of WA, Ms Pumpa paid around $12 for a loaf of bread. Her advice: stock up in smaller towns before hitting the tourist trail and skip eating out wherever possible. “These costs don’t really get accounted for before you leave,” she said.

One angle the guide raises that most travel content ignores entirely is mental health. Travelling full-time in a confined space is, the pair write, “hard work – just in a different way.” Their advice: book an Airbnb occasionally for extra space, keep communication open, and do not be afraid to head home early if needed.

The Pumpas have distilled everything they have learned into a free 34-page Ultimate Caravan Adventure Planning Guide at margieandtim.com.au – including a full budget planner and trip cost calculator, with fans following their adventures on Instagram at @margieandtim.
