Homeowners are rushing to book auctions in a frantic bid to sell their properties before Christmas.
Latest PropTrack data shows there are 175 auctions scheduled across SA this week, which is just four per cent down on the same time last year, and 222 next week, on par with the previous year.
Scheduled auctions have been well down on last year’s for months, with about 20 per cent fewer each week in the first month of the spring selling season.
Property experts said the AFL grand final and public holiday the following weekend were largely to blame.
The Belair property at 19 Serpentine Rd goes under the hammer on Saturday at 11.30am.
Auction numbers have gradually picked up over the past few weeks, which Ray White SA chief auctioneer John Morris said was because homeowners want to sell before Christmas.
“This weekend will be the last that people will be able to settle in 30 days,” he said.
“But I’m still being booked for December.
“If you can’t settle before Christmas, people think, ‘let’s at least have it sold before Christmas’.”
Five of the top six most viewed properties on realestate.com.au going under the hammer across the country this week are in SA.
The Croydon house at 50 Thomas St will go under the hammer on Sunday at 2pm.
A three-bedroom Belair home at 19 Serpentine Rd was the second most viewed, followed by a Croydon property at 50 Thomas St, a Paralowie residence at 34 Delamere Drive, a Clarence Park house at 62 Mills St and a Croydon villa at 2 King St.
Mr Morris said they had 387 auctions booked for November, which was an “incredible” amount.
“The best week we’ve had was the end of October, followed by last week and this week,” he said.
“I’ve actually already got February bookings as well.
“There are still lots of buyers out there so if you’re looking to sell your property, you should consider auction.
The Paralowie property will be auctioned at 1.30pm on Saturday.
“There are a few more properties on the market but we’re still in a period where there are more buyers.”
Harris Real Estate agent and auctioneer Tom Hector said earlier this month that listing ahead of the festive season was worthwhile for sellers as there were so many prospective buyers keen to secure a new home before the end of year slowdown.
He said there was “no question” that auction was the most transparent way to sell.
