Auctions are back and househunters are attending in droves, with competition for limited properties as fierce as ever.
Real estate experts say prospective buyers have come out of a brief quieter period over the festive season, when there were much fewer auctions, determined to secure property.
Ray White SA chief auctioneer John Morris said there was no easing back into it.
“It hasn’t slowed down at all, it’s like there was just a pause over Christmas,” he said.
“It’s not looking like it’s slowing down anytime soon either.”
Mr Morris said there were an average of 10 registered bidders at his auctions so far, with his first of the new year drawing 27.
With new property listings still way down, Mr Morris said auctions were likely to be competitive for some time to come – although talk of a rate hike next month might have an impact.

The Norwood home at 19 Rosemont St, which has a price guide of $900,000, was the most viewed property going under the hammer across the country this weekend.
OC Real Estate’s James Robertson, who is selling the property with Ellie Swan and Will Fitrigde, said both its location and “funky” style under $1m made it attractive to prospective buyers.
“I think the location is still the main driver, to get something so close to The Parade and city is desirable,” he said.

The Woodville Park property at 68 Harvey St East will be auctioned at noon on Sunday.
The Klemzig house at 17 Dianne St will go under the hammer at 10am on Saturday with a $750,000 price guide.
The Valley View house at 18 Brougham Drive will also be auctioned on Saturday, at noon.
“We’ve had 200-plus groups come through in three weeks.”
Mr Robertson was expecting the auction to be well attended based on interest throughout the property’s campaign.
Just like auctions, he said interest was strong for any new properties to the market.
“There’s definitely some pent-up demand,” Mr Robertson said.
“It felt like there was less on the market in spring than people were expecting.”
Other properties among the highest viewed heading under the hammer this weekend include a Woodville Park character home at 68 Harvey St East, a 1960s Klemzig house at 17 Dianne St and a five bedroom Valley View residence at 18 Brougham Drive.
Meanwhile, a Woodville home at 4 Rowley Tce that was also scheduled for auction this weekend has already sold, fetching $1.26m.
