A granny flat is driving buyer interest in this Gold Coast home, where an acreage lifestyle and rainforest surrounds are luring buyers beyond the beachfront.

Grace De Maio moved from Brisbane to the Glitter Strip in 2022, attracted to a sprawling 3209sq m property in Nerang.

“I was attracted by the size of the block, the home itself had a set of features I was looking for, and the location was full of natural beauty,” Ms De Maio said.

13 Country View Drive, Nerang is going to auction on July 1.

“The location in Nerang reminded me of Pullenvale out the back of Brisbane – homes with big blocks of land and tennis courts, horses and swimming pools.

“I felt this pocket of Nerang resembled that and it had good access to Brisbane as well as being close to the Coast.”

Her property at 13 Country View Drive — going to auction on July 1 — includes a two-bedroom two-bathroom home with garden and bush views as well as a granny flat.

It comes as new PropTrack data reveals searches for the term “granny flat” are up 48.9 per cent compared to the same time last year.

“The granny flat was used for accommodation when I had visits from family and friends,” she said.

“It was an extra space, extension of the main home that allowed guests privacy and peace.

“It is approved as an extension of the main house suitable for friends, family and visitors – also suitable as a teenage retreat or home office.

“However, a future buyer may wish to take the next step and upgrade it to a second dwelling making it suitable to rent out or run as a short term holiday home.”

Ms De Maio said she believed the southeast Queensland property market including Brisbane and the Gold Coast was still strong.

“I have family in Melbourne and that market there seems to be going through a plateau or downward trend,” she said.

“Queensland is ever popular as people are prepared to work hard but want a great quality of life to go with it.”

Marketing agent Matt Micallef, of Ray White TMG, said suburbs like Nerang were benefiting from renewed interest as buyers looked beyond the beachfront in search of larger landholdings, lifestyle flexibility and environmental amenity.

“Nerang offers something many people don’t realise exists on the Gold Coast — the opportunity to live immersed in nature while remaining minutes from major infrastructure, shopping centres and world-class beaches,” Mr Micallef said.
