Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly considered ditching the US following Donald Trump’s presidential win.

Speaking about Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi’s recent move to the UK, a source told InTouch the royal couple losing their close pals was “pretty upsetting”.

The pair grew close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after the royals moved to the Montecito neighbourhood following their exit from royal life in 2020, the New York Post reports.

“Ellen and Portia have been absolute rocks for Meghan and Harry from the moment they moved to California,” the source told Intouch.

“They helped them get settled in Montecito and introduced them to so many great people, they’re such a huge part of Meghan and Harry’s circle.”

The insider added that Harry and the former actress “totally understand why they’re leaving; they’ve toyed with the idea themselves since the election,” referring to Donald Trump’s election win over Vice President Kamala Harris.

Last month, Harry and Meghan were rumoured to have snapped up a luxe property in Portugal.

The couple reportedly splurged more than $US4.7 million ($A7.2 million) on a yet-to-be-constructed home at CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, a luxury development of 300 properties on the Atlantic Ocean in the small town of Melides, about 130km south of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

According to the New York Post, the pair’s rumoured new home was an “emergency escape solution” when Mr Trump moves into the White House.

Back in February, Mr Trump threatened to throw the exiled royal out of the US while speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland.

“I wouldn’t protect him,” Trump said at the time. “He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own.”

Meghan and Harry live in a $20.9 million mansion, which they purchased in 2020.

During a recent appearance at the DealBook Summit, Harry insisted that he and Meghan love their life in the US, saying: “I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here.”

The Sussexes moved to a $14.65 million ($A20.9 million) mansion in the same neighbourhood as A-listers like Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, and Oprah back in 2020 when they stepped down from their roles as senior working royals.

According to Realtor, the sprawling property boasts nine bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, a pool, and a tennis court.

It’s been rumoured that Harry misses living in the UK, but he has said that he still thinks it is too dangerous for Meghan and their children, Prince Archie, five, and three-year-old Princess Lilibet, to reside there given the lack of police security.

The “Spare” author said he believes his late mum, Princess Diana, would have wanted him to raise his kids in the US “to be able to do the things” he “undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the UK.”
