An ex-Prahran dairy where the iconic Australian movie Dogs in Space starring rock star Michael Hutchence was filmed has sold for a seven-figure sum.
Writer and director Richard Lowenstein used the building at 9 Charles St to shoot scenes for his 1986 release Dogs in Space.
The film explores the lives of a group of friends living in a Melbourne share house with Hutchence, then-lead singer of chart-topping band INXS, portraying a punk group’s frontman.

It is believed the Prahran site was also used to film part of the music video for INXS’ single Listen Like Thieves, along with St Kilda’s Palais Theatre and Northcote’s Westgarth Cinema.
ARIA Hall of Famers’ INXS have sold more than 75 million records worldwide with their singles including What You Need, Need You Tonight, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and New Sensation released in the 1980s and 1990s, prior to Hutchence’s death in 1997.
Abercrombys’ Jack Richardson declined to comment on the property’s sold price but industry sources indicated it fetched more than $3m, after being listed for $2.8m-$3m.
Despite its derelict state, the dairy attracted plenty of buyer interest.

The upper-storey terrace has a great view, but is in need of some TLC.
Used as a photography studio in the 1970s and 1980s, the structure features two levels plus an open-air upper terrace, a red-brick facade and exposed trusses.
Three bidders registered for a private auction held at the warehouse-style premises on Saturday.
A buyer who is planning to restore and renovate the building to become their home claimed the keys.
The property, which formerly served as a dairy, ice works and photo studio, has no heritage overlay.

The former dairy site is close to Chapel St, High St and Greville St in Prahran.
Most buyers were interested in converting the address into a house thanks to its character, size and location close to Chapel, High and Greville streets, Mr Richardson said.
“Very few people were looking at knocking it over and developing it on a commercial basis,” he added.
And many potential buyers loved the old dairy’s history too.
“We had the gentleman that ran the dairy decades ago, probably a century ago, his granddaughter came through with all those historic photos of the property,” Mr Richardson said.
