51 Overnewton Rd, Keilor, better known as Overnewton Castle is for sale with a $6m-$6.6m asking price.

Melbourne landmark Overnewton Castle has been listed for a $6m-$6.6m sale just months after its owners announced they planned to close the venue early next year.

A popular high tea and wedding venue since 1961, it dates back to the 1800s when it was built by Scottish pastoralist and eventual mayor of Keilor, William James Taylor.

It was bought by Dr Lesley Norton in 1975, with the Norton family renewing the residence as well as adding improvements in the 50 years they have owned it.

During the family’s tenure it has featured in films including horror flick Next of Kin.

Overnewton Castle managing director and daughter of Dr Norton, Emma Stott, said they were ready to hand the landmark over to its next custodians.

The Boston-ivy covered home is among the best Scottish castles in the Southern Hemisphere.

”Overnewton Castle is not just a property, it is our home and a piece of local history that we have cherished for 50 years,” Ms Stott said.

“It truly is a hidden gem of the west.

“Living here, respectfully updating the facilities and operating our business has been a labour

of love. As a family, we have created so many fond memories here, as well as played an

important role in the countless weddings and other events hosted on our grounds.”

In a Facebook post made in August, the family announced they would be closing it as a venue in March, 2026.

The impressive venue is home to a range of major reception spaces — including a ball room.

Weddings have been frequently held within the home’s striking chapel.

The ivy-clad castle hosts a lavish ballroom and reception space as well as a slew of formal rooms that showcase everything from ornamental carpets to ornate fireplaces.

Christies International Real Estate’s Sean Cussell is handling the sale and said he expected expats and other international parties to be among those making offers for what was “one of the finest examples of Scottish Baronial architecture in the Southern Hemisphere”.

But he noted its days as a wedding venue appeared numbered, with likely buyers expected to consider it as a school, another commercial venture — or even as a grand home.

“We are not selling it as a wedding venue, it will be sold as a trophy asset,” Mr Cussell said.

The 51 Overnewton Rd property is listed as featuring an incredible 35 rooms, including 12 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and a turret with a spiral staircase that is the same as it was when the castle was first built.

Character-filled decor and features such as decorative ceilings and ornate fireplaces feature around the home.

The gardens surrounding the house have hosted innumerable events.

Its sprawling 2.26ha allotment is one of the biggest residential plots in Melbourne’s west, and the gardens include elms and oak trees that have been growing for 176 years as well as pine tree that was grown from a seed of the Lone Pine at Gallipoli in Turkiye.

It also has 100 car parks.

Inspired by Scottish Baronial castles, the building as seen today dates back to 1859 and features dramatic bluestone walls that were quarried on site, as well as Victorian Tudor style turrets.

It is also still surrounded by outbuildings ranging from its original butchery and dairy, to a lamp room, stables and coach house.

While efforts to modernise the house have been made, it has largely remained decorated in keeping with its past.

Expressions of interest for the property close at 3pm on November 21.
